  2. Successful observation • Have a plan • Observe what you intend to observe • Be vigilant • Describe rather than interpret • Use technology wisely

  3. So, what do I observe ? What you observe depends on: Your research problem question What you can reasonably observe The time you have

  4. Consider: • Why do you want to observe this group of people and not others? • Will your presence change what is happening? • Are you going to be a distraction? • How will you record your observations?

  5. Successful observers are: • Passive • Unobtrusive • Quiet • Friendly • Honest about their purpose • Aware and systematic • Take good notes

  6. Planning an observation • Write down specifically what you want or hope to see • Create a log for notes, times, whatever is important for you to observe. • Imagine the scenario in your head. What did you leave out or not account for?

  7. Successful Observing • Focus on the person, interaction, or activity in which you are interested • But, also notice what might NOT be happening, what or who is missing? • Write down only what you must. If you are writing, you are not watching and listening • As soon as possible make your field notes

  8. Field NOtes • ASAP • Rich descriptions • Quotes • Comments • Questions you have • Graphs, maps, etc. • Basically, everything you remember

  9. Now what? • After reviewing your field notes write a page or so about what you observed, what you learned, and questions you still have. • Do your observations and interview responses support or contradict each other?
