Career Pathways in ESOL • Why should we do it? • Adult English language learners (ELLs) need English and specific skills to get jobs. • Our nation needs more skilled workers with one to two years of college - 21st Century Plan • How can we do it? • Infuse career specific vocabulary into English language teaching - teach contextually • Create a rigorous & relevant curriculum – critical thinking and higher order thinking skills • Can we do it? • Yes, we can!!

  3. Why should we do it? It’s right for the students! ESOL students constitute 45% of adult education population in the State of Florida. Career Pathways: • connects students with the real world. • engages and retains students in the classroom. • develops workforce readiness skills with academic achievement. • Bridges the gap between ESOL and career/education advancement

How can we do it? • Intake – assess students’ needs and goals. • Counseling/facilitation – help students develop and track their career/education plan. • Inform students on community resources, jobs, and scholarships. • Teach students employability competencies, 21st Century Skills as well as academic skills. • Establish partnerships. • Track your students’ success.

Considerations - Instruction • ESL Instruction should include rigorous academic preparation in reading, writing, vocabulary • Special classes to prepare students for transitioning to Career Pathways • Access to practicing skills outside of class - Angel LMS shells or other online instruction • Career Pathways content specific instruction • Requires collaboration between ESL & C.P. subject/content area teachers – IRSC’s ESL CNA

Rosangela Santos – IRSC • Started at IRSC ESL Program • Enrolled in the CNA classes • Obtained a CNA certification • Joined the IRSC GED® Program • Obtained the GED® Diploma • Passed the CPT without English Prep classes • Enrolled in post-secondary • Received financial aid and scholarships • Passed the NLN exam • Starts her LPN degree in Spring 2011.

  11. Alnerys Ferro Miami-Dade Public Schools • Started in the ESOL Program. • Became a classroom teacher. • She is now a student counselor.

  12. It is about their Dreams I want to get my GED! I am going to College! I’m working on my EMT certification! I want to be a nurse! I want to be a teacher!
