  2. The University of Washington was founded November 4, 1861, making it the oldest public university on the West Coast. Fall 2004

  3. In 1889 the growing UW moved to its current location, what is now known as Seattle’s “U-district.” The UW campus now consists of 693 acres, has 218 buildings, and about 80 different species of trees. Fall 2004

  4. Slide 2 The UW is located: ● 4 mi. from Downtown Seattle (15-minutes by bus); ● 39 mi. from Snoqualmie Pass skiing; ● 87 mi. from Mt. Rainier; ● 110 mi. from Canada; ● 170 mi. from Portland; ● 800 mi. from San Francisco; ● 2,680 mi. from Honolulu Fall 2004

  5. Slide 7 The first UW graduate was a woman, Clara McCarty. Clara earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the UW and went on to become the first superintendent of the Tacoma, Washington School system. The UW student resident hall, McCarty Hall, is named after her. Fall 2004

Founded in 1919, the School of Aquatic & Fishery Sciences is the largest and most diverse fisheries program in the United States. • The largest undergraduate program in the U.S., the Astronomy Department has its own on-campus planetarium and observatory. • Since 1984, the UW School of Nursing has been ranked #1 nationwide. Fall 2004

  11. Slide 10 The UW has 28,000 undergraduates and 11,000 graduate students. The UW is its own community, with a lot of great people and a lot of great opportunities. Undecided on what you want to study? Don’t worry, you have over 130 programs and 1,800 classes each quarter to explore! Fall 2004

  12. Slide 8 The UW has over 500 student clubs on campus. Can’t find one that you like? All it takes is 5 students to start a new one. The UW study abroad program has over 300 options in 60+ countries. The best part is all your credits will transfer to the UW and it costs about the same as it does to attend the UW. Fall 2004

  13. Slide 4 • 91% of freshman return for their sophomore year! • The freshman class represents 44 US states, and 28 foreign countries. More than 50 bus routes from all over King and Snohomish counties serve the University District; about 35 buses come right to campus. Fall 2004

Slide 9 The UW’s new sports facility has 8,500-square feet of free weight rooms, a climbing facility with 5,800-square feet of climbing surfaces, a pool, squash, tennis, & racquetball courts, sports café, indoor jogging track, personal trainers, over 6 tons of workout machines, lots of different sport opportunities, and much more!   16. Slide 5 RESEARCH With $1 billion/year in research funding, the UW is one of the premier public research universities in the United States. The UW receives the most federal research funding of any public university in the United States. Fall 2004

  17. Slide 6 The UW recently received a $70-million donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.  The grant is to help finance the construction of a building dedicated to the study of the human genome, and to apply the discoveries of the center to the treatment of diseases. Fall 2004

FAMOUS UW ALUMNI Bruce Lee Attended the UW from 1961 to 1964 as a drama major and opened his first kung fu studio on the “Ave.” The star of four martial arts movies, Lee was the first Asian-American superstar when he died in 1973. Since then, his life has been the subject of more than 25 biographies and one Hollywood film. Christine Gregoire, ‘71 Lead negotiator in the largest legal settlement in U.S. history, Washington state Attorney General Gregoire was a key to the 1998 landmark tobacco settlement. The nation’s four largest tobacco companies will pay 46 states $206 billion over 25 years. Fall 2004

FAMOUS UW ALUMNI Dale Chihuly, ’65’ The foremost glass artist of his generation, a founder of the Pilchuck Glass School, Chihuly is one of three American artists ever to mount a solo exhibit at the Louvre. Spend a day at his glass museum located in Tacoma, WA. Jeffrey Brotman, ’64, 67’ Brotman is best known as a founder and president of Costco, the wholesale warehouse chain that sells everything from cauliflower to computers at a discount. He also led the 1997 United Way of King County drive and is currently a UW Regent. Fall 2004

  20. Slide 11 The UW’s career center offers on-campus interviews with over 400 companies and have 7000 job opportunities per year. Every student has the option to create their own web page on a UW server with 100MB of storage space (that’s a lot of space)! Fall 2004
