Benefits of Solar • Reduce water heating costs by 50% • Reduce CO2 emissions by up to 2 tonnes per year • A very visible statement about your home • Reduces need for fossil fuels • Sun is reliable and renewable energy • Creates jobs and stimulates local economy • Is available and accessible all over BC

  7. How does it work? • Collectors absorb light from the sun • Fluids circulate the collected heat to a storage tank • Heat is transferred to the water in the storage tank • Preheated water is sent to the domestic water tank ready for use.

  8. Do We Have Enough Sun? • Solar energy from ‘light’ generated by the sun • Even cloudy days provide heat • BC averages 2200 sunshine hours / year • More than Berlin and Tokyo! • Solar can meet up to 60% of hot water needs.

  9. Will SHW work on my home? • SHW is easily retrofitted • Do a self assessment and check: • At least 6 sq metres of south facing roof space • No shade from 10am – 4pm • Need space next to existing water heater

  10. What incentives are available? • Up to $3000 for existing homes • A 3.75% fixed rate loan • New Home Renovation Tax Credit of 15% on anything over $1000 • Up to $1,375 for new homes

  11. How much will it cost? Group of 20 or more homes: Typical System Cost $6,700 LESS • SolarBC discount $1,000 • SolarBC bulk-buy $ 375 • EcoEnergy Rebate $ 1,375 • HR Tax Credit $ 800 ---------- Cost to customer $3,150 Plus an additional$300 rebate for FortisBC customers

  12. How much will I save? • Systems last for 25 – 30 years • Typical hot water costs $400 / year • Save up to $6,000 in energy costs • Return on investment between 5 – 15% • Energy costs will go up • Increase the resale value of your home

  13. How do I apply? • Step 1: Do a Solar Self Assessment. • Step 2: Get a LiveSmart BC/ecoEnergy Audit • Step 3: Choose a Registered Contractor • Step 4: Receive SolarBC discounts • Step 5: Arrange 2nd Audit to qualify for $1375 • Step 6: Monitoring, inspection and customer satisfaction

  14. Who does the work? • Registered SolarBC contractors • Evaluated for • technical capability • experience • customer care • pricing • Qualified Installers certified by CanSIA • Systems are CSA certified or equivalent and collectors are all approved by NRCan

  15. Training • New 4-day and 6-day training program available through Northern Lights College • Includes solar hot water training, roof fall safety and up to 4 installations

  16. What incentives are available? Municipal Buildings, Schools, Social Housing • Upto 25% from ecoEnergy grants (max: $400,000) • Matching grant from SolarBC to $40,000
