  13. BUILDING SECTOR Worlwide Presence Our retarders are used by over 1.000 plaster and plasterboard plants in over 70 COUNTRIES SICIT 2000 S.p.A. is the main supplier with retarders of all Multinational Groups worldwide

  14. Characteristics of our Retarders PLAST RETARD PE (Powder) & PLAST RETARD L (Liquid) Can be used in a profitable way with both neutral and chemical gypsums Can be used for many applications: Moulding plaster; Ceramics; Plasterboard; Dental plaster; Joint fillers; Adhesion Mortars; Gypsum blocks; stucco;plastering; Machine application. Proportional correlation between setting retard and retarder amount. Good performance as a setting retarder at low dosages too. Standardised quality. Allow the reduction of water for plasterboard production with energy saving. Chosen for their Competitive ( Activity / Price )

  15. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. THE USE OF SETTING RETARDERS IN PLASTER FORMULATIONS

  16. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. Modern gypsum industry needs additives able of giving intermediates and finished products characterized by technical specification concerning workability and quality. Several additives are required in order to reach this target and, in particular way, additives called retarders, able to control the setting of plaster.

  17. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. Applications requiring retarders

  18. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. Stucco: generally calcined gypsum usually describe as Plaster of Paris. Plaster: calcined gypsum of any type, generally formulated with functional additives and inert aggregates. Functional additives: natural or synthetic substances added in small quantities in order to modify the behaviour and characteristics of the stucco. Aggregates: inert granular/powder/fibrous material added in major quantities in order to modify the properties of a plaster. Retarders: a functional additive postponing the initial setting and slowing the speed of setting. Accelerator: a functional additive slightly forwarding the initial set and speeding up the reaction. (example: Potassium sulphate) Starter: a functional additive that starts and speeds-up the setting in providing germs of crystallization. Ball Milled accelerator BMA or finely grinded gypsum. Setting of gypsum: the mechanical hardening process of a plaster slurry with 2 phases • Initial setting: first stiffening of the slurry. • End setting: the point at which a moulded body is hard enough to be handled. On site, the finishing must end. DEFINITIONS

  19. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. THE PARAMETERS TO BE OBSERVED Since premixed powder products are applied by people on site, a number of requirements, here called workability, are necessary: Setting kinetics: Open time without stiffening adapted to the kind of work. Slow progress in stiffening. Rheological properties: - Easiness of distributing and levelling - Stable form (not flowing from the wall when worked on) Finishing: - Crack free - Ability to be smoothened Reliability: - Constancy in water demand - Constancy in setting characteristics - Constancy in rheology Health aspects: - No toxic substances allowed - Skin irritants to avoid Additionally some requirements on the finished product are to consider: - Requirements in adhesion on support - Requirements for hardness - Requirements for compression strength - Visual aspect

  20. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. IMPORTANCE OF THE RETARDER IN GYPSUM FORMULATIONS Formulations of plaster are much more complex and demanding. The retarder is one of the key additives in plaster formulations since it controls or is part of the control of the workability. The benefits of PlastRetard PE in pre-mixed formulated plasters are mainly: Adjustment of settingkinetics PlastRetard PE can be used to fine-tune the hardening kinetics of plasters. The use of PlastRetard PE alone or in combination with Tartaric acid and/or optionally together with a starter, permits to model every desired kinetic of hardening. The actual formulation depends on the type of calcined base plaster and on the intended use. Synergies: Generally, the combine usage of PlastRetard PE and Tartaric Acid results in synergies that permit to reduce the total amount of retarders in the formulations. Therefore, typically, the costs of formulation will decrease.

  21. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. First of all retarders must not affect the pH value, odour, colour of plaster slurry and must not create negative effects in time. CHARACTERISTICS A “high quality retarder” must be selected for the following characteristics: stability in the normal storage conditions easy dispersion in order to guarantee homogeneous finished products high solubility in water in order to maintain the same retarding efficiency in every point of the slurry and in the finished product standardisation in order to assure the same performance in different production batches proportional correlation between retarding effect and retarder dosage over a wide range of concentration

  22. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. Retarders could be classified on the basis of chemical composition: organic acids as citric acid, tartaric acid organic compounds based on a mixture of degraded polyamides salified with calcium such as “PlastRetard PE and PlastRetard L” inorganic compounds such as phosphates (with low activity) Retarders could be classified on the basis of optimal activity depending on pH value of the slurry: neutral formulations: product based on a mixture of degraded polyamides salified with calcium and citric acid. alkaline formulations: tartaric acid, products based on a mixture of degraded polyamides salified with calcium

  23. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. REMARKABLE ADVANTAGES OFPlastRetard PE & PlastRetard L PlastRetard do not affect the quality of finished products PlastRetard gives the suitable retard even at low dosages PlastRetard gives the suitable setting curves PlastRetard works in synergism with other retarders PlastRetard does not nourishing moulds PlastRetard is a biodegradable product

  24. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. The chart below shows that the amount of retarder does not affect the resistance of gypsum plaster Retarders do not affect the quality of finished product

  25. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. PlastRetard is effective at pH values ranging from 5 to 12, its maximum efficiency level is between pH 7 to 10. In this respect it is comparable with Citric Acid. The pH where plasterboard and other pre-fabricated products are prepared lies in the centre of effectiveness. Efficiency of different retarders as a function of the pH value Activity of retarder versus pH of the slurry

  26. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. EFFECT OF MECHANICAL STRESS ON THE ACTIVITY OF THE RETARDERS

  28. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. Retarders give the suitable setting retard

  29. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. PlastRetard PE activity is reduced in alkaline environmentPlastRetard PE activityreachesits maximum in neutralformulations

  30. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. Retarders work in synergism

  31. SICIT 2000 S.p.A. CONCLUSIONS The use of gypsum in building industry is increasing sensibly every year and worldwide. Retarders are nowadays very important for gypsum industry in order to guarantee the standardization of the finished products and the optimization of industrial practice. Every year new materials, additives and applications are studied in order to optimize building practice. The selection of the right retarder is fundamental because its effect on the final product is very significant. The use of the different additives allows the producer to manufacture the desired final product, no matter the quality of the raw material.
