  14. Team • Coach Carter “I will do push ups”

  15. Practice Policy • All players are expected to be on time, dressed, and ready to go at the start of practice. • If you miss practice it may affect your playing time. • If you know you are going to be absent you must let one of the coaches know before practice by phone or email. DO NOT RELY ON A TEAMMATE TELLING THE COACH FOR YOU; YOU NEED TO CONTACT ONE OF THEM ON YOUR OWN. • School policy is you must be in school by 10:00am to be able to participate that day. • If you have two unexcused absences from practice you may be asked to leave the team.

  16. Team Rosters • In the past we have never cut players but we may need to. • Cuts will be made prior to the first game so you will receive a full activity refund. • Reasons for possible cut: • Excessive players • Ability level • Negative influence on team

  17. Opportunity • Everyone is given equal opportunity to earn playing time • When making a team—Beneficial for you and the Team • Failure Happens-Learn and Grow From It • Fun and Parent Unity—2009 Megan Beaudry

  18. Selecting Teams • When it comes to choosing the teams we will abide by the following criteria: • All players will be given an equal chance to make the team and will be assigned a level based on: • First, they will play at a level that will benefit the program. • Second, they will play at a level that will allow them to develop to the fullest of their individual potential as a player. • Lastly, the player can accept their role on the team and be positive in helping the team reach its goals. • We will carry up to 18 players on the varsity roster. • The junior varsity may consist of players in 11th grade and below as no senior will play on the junior varsity. • 9th grade will consist of 9th grade and below.

  19. Game Policy • We expect all varsity players to attend the JV or 9thgrade game prior to the varsity game. • JV and 9th grade players are expected to stay for the entire varsity game. • If the team you are playing on is not playing we will all sit together to show team unity. Leaving a basketball game to go to a practice for another sport is not acceptable! It is basketball season!!! • All 9th – 12th grade players are expected to ride the bus home with the team after road games. • New Policy—See Handbook

  20. Day after game • It is expected that all players are in school the day after a game. • If you are not in school by the start of the next day you will not be able to practice or play in game if we have a game that night. • If you do have an appointment, you may be required to bring a note back from the doctor to verify.

  21. Dress Code • You are expected to dress up for most basketball games! • Occasionally, we may decide to wear sweatshirts and khakis or we may wear our sweats; this will be communicated to you prior to each game. • Proper dress is a part of pride in yourself, your team, your school, St. Michael-Albertville communities. Jeans are NOT acceptable on any game days unless the coaches make an exception. • If you look good, you play good!

  22. Playing Time • Playing time is one of the most difficult decisions any coach makes. • We know it can be very difficult to practice as hard as anyone else on the team and not get playing time. • It will likely happen this year where players will be upset with their playing time. Unfortunately, there is never an easy answer. • Emailing or calling coaches about playing time is not acceptable!

  23. Time Commitment • No matter what the activity, family comes first. When a player has family commitments, we want and expect the player to make family their first priority. • Our hope is when you are planning family vacations that you consider the impact the player’s absence will have on our basketball team. If a player misses games or practices it may affect their playing time and/or dressing for games when they return. • If you have vacations planned or are planning one please notify coaches as soon as possible.

  24. Other Sports and Activities during the Basketball Season • Participating in other sports during the basketball season: • Varsity Players: No practices or games before the night of a basketball game. After January 31st you will not be permitted to participate in any other sport. We need your full commitment to our program. • 9th Grade and JV Players: No practices or games the day or night before a basketball game. • Missing practice to attend another sport or activity is considered unexcused and will affect playing time. Two unexcused absences may result in dismissal from team. Exception would be that you are finishing up your fall sport that has extended its season into the play-offs.

  25. Academics • We expect all of our players to perform at a high level in the classroom. • We will not ask any teacher for extra privileges or exceptions for you during the season. • We will be leaders in the classroom. That means getting assignments ahead of time if you know we are going to be absent. • Missing practice or games to do school work is not excused, you need to manage your time.

  26. Envy Not everyone becomes successful the same way and successful people don’t bring others down.

  27. On and Off the Court Behavior • Our players will take their position as role models very seriously. Knights basketball players will be expected to conduct themselves in a classy manner on and off the court. • We expect that our players will never use drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. • Such abuses will be dealt with harshly. The MSHSL and school’s policy will be enforced. • In addition to the school’s policy, a player may be subject to additional consequences determined by the coaching staff. • Note: this policy is not limited to the duration of the basketball season, but rather the entire calendar year.

  28. Emphasis on Winning • At all levels below the varsity, the primary emphasis will be on player development. • As players climb up the competitive ladder there will be an increased emphasis on winning. Upon reaching the varsity level, winning will be a primary goal. • We, as coaches, recognize that a bi-product of this emphasis is going to be frustrated players and/or parents. Understand that every decision made by the coaching staff is intended to improve our team.

  29. Respect • We, coaches, respect all players and in return we expect your respect. • You may not agree with our decisions but you need to respect them. We will not tolerate players disrespecting coaches, teammates or opponents. • Look your coach in the eye when we are talking to you. Walking away or rolling your eyes is a sign of disrespect.

  30. Social Networking • Tweeting, facebooking and any other sources of social networking that is negative, bragging, putsdown, or shows slander toward a teammate, coach or opponent may result in: • sitting out a game • being kicked off the team • Positive comments are acceptable!

  31. Player Promotion • Occasionally, the coaching staff may decide to move players from junior varsity to varsity or vice versa. • This decision is based on a number of factors and is made in consultation with the entire coaching staff; with Coach Hamre making the final decision.

  32. Communication • Parents are welcome to come and observe practice unless it ends up being too much of a distraction. • In general, parents need to realize that coaching decisions are never made against a certain player; they are always made for the good of the overall team. • Parent-coach communication should not take place before or after the games; this is a very hectic time for parents, who get emotionally caught up in the game, and coaches have several responsibilities to take care of before and after the game. • At no time will any coach respond to an email that is directed at x’s and o’s or playing time. If there is a problem, email is not the way to communicate! • IT IS NOT OKAY FOR PARENTS TO TALK TO COACHES ABOUT GAME DECISIONS AND PLAYING TIME WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE GAMES!

  33. Other Polices • Cell phones are not to be used on the bus, in the gym, or in the locker room. • No jewelry at practices or games. • Wear your reversible blue and white to every practice. • Wear a gray undershirt that covers your underwear/bra. If you are not dressed appropriately you will not be able to practice. • If you have an injury or illness you must communicate it with one of the coaches and athletic trainer. • All players will be given a uniform and it is your responsibility to take care of the uniform. Any lost or damaged uniforms will be the responsibility of the player and will be charged for the uniform

  34. Lettering • For a player to earn a varsity letter they must reach the following: • Play in at least 30% of total halves in a season. • Play meaningful minutes in section or state games. • Coach’s discretion. • All seniors will letter.

  35. Parenting during the season • Please don’t shout advice to players – shout encouragement. • Please don’t harass the referees. Parents that loudly harass the referee are embarrassing to the players and the team. • Please don’t harass other teams’ players. • Please don’t talk badly about the coach or other players in front of your child • As a parent, be involved in a positive way.

  36. Fan Movement • School song • Team-Coming From and Going To Locker Room • Support STMA-Boys Basketball, Hockey, Wrestling • Parents—Support all levels

  37. Elastic Clause • Recognize that the above list of policies and procedures is not comprehensive. As coaches, we reserve the right to add or adapt policies as we deem necessary. All district and administrative policies and decisions will supersede the policies listed above.
