Ballard and Rick Archbold • Summary: Dr. Robert Ballard takes students onto the submarine Alvin as he becomes the first person to explore the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic. Dr. Ballard describes some of the tragic events that led to the sinking of the ship while showing students what he finds on this incredible voyage. • Reading Goal: Problem and Solution • Team Cooperation Goal: Active Listening

  9. Partner Rate & Review-5 mintues • Divide your words between you and your partner and test each other on the vocabulary. • If your partner doesn’t know the word read them the definition and meaningful sentence.

  10. Build Background-10 minutes • Reading goal: Cause and Effect What causes and car to stop? What allows the car to go through? What causes the car to slow down • Use think-pair-share to find the cause for these situations • A cause makes something happen • Effect is something that happens because of the cause

  11. Cause and Effect Aunt Franny was walking down the steps when she tripped over her cat, Slinky. Slinky slept on the stairs sometimes and this time Aunt Franny stepped on her and fell all the way down the stairs. For a week Aunt Franny was on crutches with a sprained ankle, and Slinky had to sleep in the garage.

  14. Adventures in Writing-10 minutes • Writing prompt: If you could visit a famous place or thing, which one would you pick? Describe the place or thing and explain why you would pick it.

  15. Vocabulary Activity-5 minutes • Pick three words and write a meaningful sentence for the word • Read sentences.

  16. Fluency – 10 minutes • Read page 543 • Rate your partner’s fluency based on fluency rubric. • Make sure you comment on expressiveness, smoothness, and rate and correctness. • Be positive and constructive.
