  2. Mission Overview • Our BalloonSat has two main objectives. • The first objective is to send petri dishes with bacteria growing on them into space to see how they are affected by the conditions of space. The three main factors that we think will affect the bacteria are temperature, ultraviolet radiation and extremely low pressure. • The second objective is to collect bacteria living in the stratosphere. There have only been a few experiments concerning the bacteria living in the stratosphere and so there is very little known about them. What we hope to discover about them is what they use for energy, how they survive the UV radiation, and how they survive in the extreme cold.

  3. Material List

  4. Material List (continued) The remainder of the budget will be used for spare parts, for parts that may be bought as the satellite design evolves, and for other unforeseen expenses.

  5. Basics of Design • Foam core construction • Aluminum foil insulation • Rectangular prism shape • 2 petri dishes on top (exposed) • heater beneath one • Servo arm on top • holds a sterile petri dish • includes motor, plywood base, and plastic connector rod •  2 petri dishes inside (Velcro connection) • Heater, Basic Stamp, HOBO, camera inside • Lithium batteries for power

  9. Biggest Worries… One of our biggest worries is being able to properly seperate the variables. Since we have to expose a petri dish to the UV and Cosmic radiation, we may run into problems involving temperature and the durability of the petri dish in a vacuum. Another one of our worries is being able to get a solid vacuum seal on the petri dishes, seeing as an improper seal would invalidate all of our data.
