  2. Mission Overview • Ourobjectiveisto conduct scientific analysis of near space conditions by imaging stars through the means of a timed extension of the mechanical platform with a mirror cluster attached at the end in order to obtain pictures at many angles. • We plan to discover how to build the mechanical systems needed to extend a platform with a cluster of mirrors on the end. This mission will hopefully give us the ability to learn about the near space environment and many new technological skills involving the mechanical platform deployment. The mission will also help us discover how to retrieve the mechanical platform back into the satellite before landing in order to keep the mirror from being damaged. • We are doing this mission for the challenge of the extendable arm and the possibility of better images of stars.

  3. Design • The BalloonSat shall be a basic rectangular prism shape. A plastic tube shall be placed through the center of the cube, top to bottom. • The center of one exterior wall shall contain a double door that shall be connected by internal hinges and shall be pushed open by the extending mechanical platform. • The open door shall allow the camera to see out of a plexi-glass window. • After the mechanical platform is deployed, a mirror cluster connected to the end shall allow the camera to capture a wide representation of what is visible at 30 km. • The mechanical platform shall be along the bottom of the BalloonSat when not deployed . A set of gears run by a simple motor and timing circuit shall deploy and retract the platform. • One heater with a central location shall keep the internal BalloonSat temperature above zero degrees Celsius. Other systems including the HOBO data logger and timing circuit shall be placed accordingly to counter the weight of the camera and mirror.

  6. How we are going to complete our mission • By assigning leaders to key parts of our Balloonsat’s construction we are all able to help on each part while the 2 leaders of that part specialize in the given area. • By following our schedule and adding more meetings if needed, we will be able to have a complete and tested BalloonSat ready for launch.

  11. Our Worries • Time… • Our team is worried that we will not have enough time to complete building our BalloonSat and running the tests on it. • BalloonSat not functioning properly… • Our team is also worried that our BalloonSat will not function or our science will not work.
