  1. Lesson two Animals and their habitats

  2. Learning objectives • In this lesson we will: • Refresh and consolidate our knowledge of ecosystem and the components that make up an ecosystem. • Understand and be able to recognize an animal habitat. what makes up a habitat and how animals adapt to a habitat? • Understand what are some of the Australian habits like and how animals adapt to these habitats.

  3. Do you know these concepts? • Habitat • Ecosystem • Ecology Not sure? Watch this learning program before you move on. • http://lrrpublic.cli.det.nsw.edu.au/lrrSecure/Sites/Web/skoool/bio/step/habitats/index.html

  4. Game on A self test game: Do you know what animals live in a particular habitat? Clicking the link below to test your knowledge on habitats and create your own habitats. Choose old version to play which include quiz • http://mrnussbaum.com/habitatmaker2/

  5. Can you answer these questions now: • What is a habitat? • What does a habitat provide animals with? • Can you share some examples? Still not quite sure? Click the link to find out the answers

  6. Habitats Where a plant or animal lives is called its habitat.

  7. Habitat A habitat provides an animal with two important things: • Food/water • Shelter It is a safe place to reproduce and it is ideally protected. A frog in its habitat – the pond. Food to eat – water to spawn – damp air so not to dry out.

  8. Where do we live? As humans, we are able to live all over the world; in the most adverse conditions. We are able to adapt to our environment – however hostile – as we design clothes and shelter to suit the surrounding area. This protects us from the weather and animals that may be harmful to us.

  9. Questions: What do birds need to thrive? • Feathers must be camouflaged from predators. • Lots of food, such as worms, in abundance. • Plenty of materials, such as twigs, to build good nests for their young.

  10. Questions • Where might you find frogs? • What environment would suit a camel? • What should Zookeepers do to ensure that an animal, out of its natural environment, stays healthy? • How would you make a penguin feel at home in a artificial environment such as a zoo? • Describe the habitat of: a) A Polar bear b) a crocodile c) a lion d) an elephant e)a camel.

  11. A little project for you Design a habitat for black-footed ferret 1. Watch slides on the projector and design a habitat for black-footed ferret. http://www.arkive.org/education/games/design-a-habitat 2. Summarize the slides you watched: 1). When talking about HABITAT, what things did Sir Chumbley talk about? E.g. He talked about what type of land/place black-footed ferret usually lived on. (answer: grassland.) 2). To summarize, what is the relationship between black footed ferret and its habitat.

  12. He talked about: * what type of land/place black-footed ferret usually lived on. * * * * * *

  13. Task - Demonstrate a habit for an Australian animal: Due Monday 18th November • Choose an Australian animal and do some research on its habitat and find out how this animal adapts to this habitat? • Record your research results and write them down. Suggestion: your report can have the similar structure as those in the slides, covering the points in the previous list. • Use Printing Press (click the link below) to create a brochure or a poster as educational materials for other school children at lower stages. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/Printing_Press/ • Australian animals and habitats resources are provided in the next page. Good luck and have fun!!

  14. Resources • Explore how a a range of Australian animals adapt to their living environments. http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L1471/index.html • This program contains a diverse selection of Australian threatened animals. http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/R11086/index.html • 25 resources about Australian animals and their habitats. http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/R10702/index.html
