  2. 6 Buddhist Meditation Techniques

  3. Meditation calms the mind and helps us in connecting ourselves with the inner world. Tranquility, peace and a sense of calm overshadow distracting thoughts. • In Buddhism there are a lot of techniques and objects that help in stabilizing the mind. Here is a list of such meditation techniques: • 1) Visualization : • Buddhism meditation techniques • In this meditation technique, a person gazes at a physical object, it can be the image of the Buddha. One is asked to gaze at the image till the appearance becomes very familiar. After this the person closes his eyes to create a replica of the image with the help of imagination. • The point behind this practice is to stabilize the mind alone and not the eyes. When done for the first time, you may not be very successful in doing it and image in the mind may be unstable.

  4. 2) Awareness of one’s breathing : • The practice of focusing on one’s breath is a lot easier than visualization because one need not imagine anything. Awareness of breath can be practiced in several different ways. There are totally three methods of practicing awareness of breath: • *Certain people concentrate on the abdomen’s rise and fall during inhalation and exhalation. • *Some people focus on the physical sensations of the breath from the nostrils to the abdomen. • *Another method involves focusing on the breath passing through the nostrils and above the upper lip. • All the above breathing methods are helpful in soothing a disturbed mind.

  5. 3) Mindfulness : meditation-for fitness • Mindfulness is a key part of meditation in Buddhism. It is being able to see things as they actually are without any prejudice, feelings or mood surrounding them. It helps in reduction of stress, depression and pain. • Mindfulness requires a quiet place, you should sit in such a place in silence and be aware of your thoughts. Start focusing on your breathing or recite a mantra that is means a lot to you. You can even practice mindfulness without doing meditation. You can practice living in the moment. Just be aware of yourself, what you are feeling and what is happening in the vicinity. As you start living in the present, identify the things around you that you have not noticed and taken for granted.

  6. 4) Mantra : • Buddhism has a lot of mantras that can be chanted while you do meditation. One example is the mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’. This mantra is linked with Tibetan Buddhism. There are several other mantras and can be recited by anyone. 5) Prayer wheels : • In Buddhism you have prayer wheels that are believed to be used to gain wisdom, good karma and ward off bad karma. The prayer wheel has the mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ written on it. When you use the prayer wheel, you are supposed to spin in it clockwise direction.

  7. 6) Distant healing : • Distant healing is also called absent healing. It is the process of sending healing energy to a person over a distance. The person can be away from the healer’s presence and still get cured. The distance between the patient and healer can be anything from 50 feet to 5000 miles or more. It just does not matter and makes no difference in the healing. In modern times, research has been done and it has been found that distant healing prayer is effective.
