  6. Definitions What is Computer Mediated Communication? (CMC) • Any form of communication using computers and computer networks e.g. e-mail, electronic conferences, web chats • Allows access and interaction between people and databases all over the world

  7. Definitions What is Face-to-Face Communication? • Any form of communication allowing both sender and receiver to communicate in a timely manner • The receiver may disagree, ask a question, or repeat information.

  10. Computer-mediated Communication Vs. Face-to-Face Communication • Debatable issue for years • Rise of Internet and advancements in technology  no. of cyber users  each day The lingering question to many of us is: Has Computer-mediated Communication eroded human’s ability to communicate face-to-face?

Supporting Argument #1 CMC has resulted in less effective face-to-face communication • Social Presence Theory The more physical contact we have, the greater the “presence” • In CMC, communicators cannot see others’ non-verbal language such as facial expressions & voice intonations etc. harder to interpret statements and responses

Supporting Argument #1 CMC has resulted in less effective face-to-face communication • Experts say:“In a verbal exchange, the words we use are only 7% effective; while the tone of our voice is 43% effective and non-verbal cues are 50% effective.” • As CMC lacks non-verbal elements or feedback cues, participants are less able to get to know the person they are conversing with less personal conversation • no. of people engaged in Cyberspace harder for them to communicate effectively in real life

Supporting Argument #2 CMC has resulted in less effective face-to-face communication • In CMC, our imagination gets most activated • The mind tends to create a visual image of the other person – assigning a particular voice, appearance, expectations to the fantasized character so that it seems more “real”

Supporting Argument #2 CMC has resulted in less effective face-to-face communication • CMC is mostly a dialogue between one’s mind & the designed character of imagination • Stereotypes High tendency to feel disappointed when we finally communicate with the “cyber personas” in real life • Unrealistic, warped expectations in CMCresulting in less effective face-to-face communication

Supporting Argument #3 CMC has resulted in less effective face-to-face communication However in real life… • Degree of accountability • People think that because we are physically present, we have to take responsibility for our words and actions • This affects the quality of face-to-face communication

  20. Counter Argument #1 Benefits of Computer-mediated Communication (CMC): • Provides people with a platform to air their views &opinions freely • Increases their confidence to share beliefs without the fear of being judged too critically

  21. Rebuttal #1 • trend & commodity of CMC in our daily lives  Cyber-bullying has become a concern

  22. Counter Argument #2 • CMC makes interactions possible even when we are continents apart • With CMC, people are also able to communicate when they are unable to interact on physical accounts

  23. Rebuttal #2 Studies indicated that... • Children spend lesser time in communicating with their parents • They are easily distracted during the process of communication, particularly with the rise of CMC Resulting in less effectiveface-to-face communication.

  24. Counter Argument #3 • Through CMC, we are able to first gain basic background information about the people we are meeting in real life • This helps alleviate any emotional and psychological barrier • Hence, cyber communication has now proved to be an efficient “ice breaker”!

  25. Rebuttal #3 • People can always assume pretentious personas through Cyberspace via CMC as long as the communication does not involve both parties to be physically present.

  27. Conclusion CMC has resulted in less effective face-to-face communication As our analysis indicates that CMC has more cons outweighing its pros, our team is positive that our claim holds true. Thus, we should all strongly advocate the use of Face-to-Face Communication as opposed to CMC as a means of interactions between and amongst people.
