  1. Alex Sommers: Presentation Business Representative: ISM-South Florida

  2. Supply Chain Management……….. • Buys stuff………….. • - Of the desired/required quality • - With the required delivery/quantity schedule • - At the right price……. Via negotiated contract • - And with RELIABILITY…….. “it will happen” • And buying stuff is huge; manufacturers, for example, now buy 60% of the content of their products

  3. Professional Societies in SCM • * ISM………Institute for Supply Management…..47,000 members, six chapters in Florida, ISM-South Florida is the local chapter www.ISM.ws …..started by purchasing managers 50 years ago • * APICS……American Production and Inventory Control Society…….. 37,000 members, 200 in South Florida, www.apics.org …… started by factory managers and schedulers after WW2 • * CSCMP….Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals…….8500 members, logistics origin

  4. SCM professionals are………….. • * Typically unaware of environmental impacts of buying decisions • * Price-driven and hence advocates for port and air cargo expansions: eg., PortMiami and Port Everglades. • * Generating huge packaging volumes which may or may not be re-cycled, and may create problems[wood pallets] • * Unaware of South Florida reef conditions and looming threats from commerce expansions

  5. Goals would be…………… • * Create awareness in SCM community of shoreline fragility and importance of reefs and beaches • * Have SCM professionals consider impacts of increased container shipping and problematic packaging recyclability on the shoreline environment • * Seek support from SCM community for damage mitigation efforts and reef regeneration projects • ……………….. All of which means more communication with SCM professional groups for education and advocacy purposes
