  2. Goal & Overview • Provide a practical and consistent approach for your practice interview • Questions to ask a potential employer • Questions a potential employer may ask you • Considerations from spouse/significant other/family perspective

  3. What DoIAsk? A. Practice Related: “Autonomy Factors” 1. Who governs, who leads, and how? 2. Where do physicians fit into the leadership of the organization? 3. What are the values of the organization?

  4. What DoIAsk? B. Employment Related: “Financial Factors” 4. How am I paid? 5. What is the organization’s financial position? 6. What is the organization’s marketshare and competition?

  5. What DoIAsk? C. Resource Related: “Support Factors” 7. What is the staff/allied health staff turnover? 8. What is the office space, operating room space, equipment, and support staff situation for my position?

  6. What DoIAsk? D. “Happiness Factors” 9. Describe the internal and external politics. 10. How satisfied are the physicians ? How satisfied are the allied health staff?

  7. What DoIAsk? Specific questions to ask at practice interview for different specialties Surgical sub-specialties: • How are cases referred to you • OR equipment and OR block time • Is there a partnership track

  8. What DoIAsk? Specific questions to ask at practice interview for different specialties Radiology • Availability of teleradiology services for night coverage • Support of practice for areas of interest such as interventional • Type and age of equipment being used by the practice

  9. What DoIAsk? Specific questions to ask at practice interview for different specialties Anesthesia • What is the practice model? (supervisory or not) • Are OB and Peds/Neonatal coverage incorporated into the practice? • Types and number of cases

  10. What DoIAsk? Specific questions to ask at practice interview for different specialties Laboratory Medicine and Pathology: • Support staff available for collection and handling of specimens • Time expected to participate in internal/external conferences

  11. What DoIAsk? Specific questions to ask at practice interview for different specialties Academic Practices • Specific details related to academic advancement and promotion • Specific details related to attaining tenure

  12. What DoTheyAsk? • “What will you bring to our practice that will enhance our ability to market this practice? • Examples: specific research interests, specific procedural skills, specific educational or career goals, specialized training in medicine or another field (informatics, etc)

  13. What DoTheyAsk? • “Describe a situation where……..or describe how you handled a situation that involved…..” • Characteristics: • team player • leadership abilities • flexibility • patience • caring • ability to see the “big picture”

  14. What Do We Ask? • Spouse/Significant Other/Family concerns are an important aspect to consider during the interview process: • Career interests • Housing • Recreation • Schools • Community Resources
