  3. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions Rules Step 1: Multiply the denominator by the whole number. Step 2: Add the numerator. This is your new numerator. Step 3: New numerator over the original denominator. Example: 3 ¼ = 13/4 2 ½ = 5/2
