  1. STEP-TAS and its Benefits to Thermal Engineering STEP for Aerospace Workshop January 18, 2001 Georg Siebes

  2. Outline • STEP • Zooming in on STEP-TAS • STEP-TAS Detail • The U.S. STEP-TAS Pilot • What are the benefits GS - STEP-TAS

  3. What is STEP “STEP is aninternational standard, which provides an unambiguous, computer-interpretable definition of the physical and functional characteristics of a product throughout its life cycle.” • STEP = STandard for the Exchange of Product model data = casual name for ISO 10303 GS - STEP-TAS

  4. Mechanical and assembly design: AP203 and AP214 Mechanical and assembly design: AP203 and AP214 Electromechanical design: AP210 and AP212 Electrotechnical design: AP210 and AP212 Structural analysis: AP209 Structural analysis: AP209 Product Configuration: Technical Data Package: AP232 System Engineering: AP233 AP203 / AP214 / PDM Schema Technical Data Package: AP233 Product Configuration: System Engineering: AP233 AP203 / AP214 / PDM Schema Results of Analysis, Test and Operation Campaigns: STEP-NRF Operation Campaigns: STEP-NRF Results of Analysis, Test and Optical analysis: NODIF Optical analysis: NODIF STEP Architecture for Aerospace * *European Cooperation for Space Standardization ECSS WG E-10-07 Exchange of Product Data Documentation: PDF, HTML ISO 10303 Industrial Automation Systems - Product representation and exchange Documentation: PDF Thermal analysis: STEP-TAS Thermal analysis: STEP-TAS Propulsion: STEP-PRP Propulsion: STEP-PRP Mass-CoG-MoI: STEP-MCI (subset of AP214) Mass-CoG-MoI: STEP-MCI (subset of AP214) You are here Fluid Dynamics (& other discipline oriented protocols) … (other discipline oriented protocols) system product definition analysis & simulation & test results & delivery In production use Commercial implementation started Final stages of development GS - STEP-TAS

  5. What is STEP-TAS • STEP-TAS = Thermal Analysis for Space Application Protocol for space missions and models used in thermal analysis. GS - STEP-TAS

  6. p2 direction-1 end_angle p1 diameter direction-2 start_angle p3 Details of STEP-TAS • Shapes • Primitives: triangle, rectangle, quadrilateral, disc, cylinder, cone, sphere, paraboloid • Compound shapes • Shapes conform to AP203 CC4 non-manifold surfaces • Thermal-radiative model • associates thermal-radiative faces with surface shapes • thermal mesh • properties GS - STEP-TAS

  7. main body ( of spacecraft ) true_anomaly periapsis governing_celestial_body = 1 eccentricity semi_major_axis Details of STEP-TAS • Space mission aspects • orbit arc (Keplerian and discrete ephemeris) • space co-ordinate system, celestial bodies • orientation, general and named pointing, spinning, linear rotation rates • space thermal environment, including constant or lat/long dependent albedo / planetshine tables GS - STEP-TAS

  15. Benefit: Compliance with NASA Standard 2817 • The NASA CIO has officially approved and released NASA-STD-2817 (COMPUTER-AIDED ENGINEERING, DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING DATA INTERCHANGE), which includes the requirement for CAx systems used by NASA to have tools that support ISO 10303 (STEP). • Preferred standards include APs 203, 209, 210, 225, and 227 for exchanging data among PDM, mechanical and electronic CAD/CAM, civil and facilities CAD, and CAE/analysis systems. STEP-TAS included in draft of next revision. • Tools that enable data interchange, compliant with these standards, must be available to all CAE/CAD/CAM users at each NASA Center. GS - STEP-TAS

  16. ~ N STEP Benefit: Significant reduction in translators ~ N2 Point to Point Translators GS - STEP-TAS

  17. Benefits of STEP - TAS • Thermal Radiation models can be freely exchanged globally • Some thermal processes can be tailored to needs rather than being driven by tools • Thermal models can be archived and retrieved independent of tool proprietary formats • Will save time and money • Engineers can spend more time engineering and less time translating data GS - STEP-TAS

  18. Benefits Demonstrate that ... . . Faster, Better, Cheaper reduced cycle time Art to Part faster time to market . . ... are not just words GS - STEP-TAS

  19. Remember STEP is ... S omething T o E mbrace P ermanently GS - STEP-TAS
