About the Department of Special EducationThe faculty in the department of special education is nationally recognized for its contributions in the field of Special Education. In addition to NCATE and CTC accreditation, the department takes pride in meeting many of the recommended program standards set by the Council for Exceptional Children, (CEC). The department is both substantive and technical, theoretical and practical and realist and entrepreneurial.

Department of Special Education application submitted w/$50. fee http://ed.fullerton.edu/adtep

Letter of Intent

GPA overall 2.75, last 60 units for credential; 3.0 master degree

Passage of California Basic Education Skills test (CBEST)

3 Letters of recommendation

Letter of Intent

TB Test results/MMR recs.

Department interview with faculty will be scheduled TB Test results/MMR recs.

Certificate of Clearance

U.S. Constitution/govt.

Passage of Subject Matter Competency (CSET)

Prerequisites Necessary for Admission to the Special Education Specialist Credential Program

Satisfactory completion of pre requisite courses

  • SPED 371 (all candidates)

  • EDEL 315 A and B, CAS 325/312 or equivalent for those students interested in working with elementary students (k-8) or

  • EDSC 310 and EDSC 320 for students interested in working with secondary students or

  • HCOM 407 for those students interested in Early Childhood Special Education only: CAS 315 for those interested in the Intern program for ECSE

  • Check with advisor before enrolling.

Double Credential Option

Students wishing to add a multiple subject credential and CLAD to their specialist credential must take, in addition to the program pre requisites, SPED 434, 438, and 451

Students wishing to add the single subject credential and CLAD to their specialist credentials must take, in addition to the program pre requisites, SPED 434 and 438 (equivalent to EDSC 410)

Full-Time Day Program

We offer a stellar program for candidates who choose to be in a full-time day program (must be free every day from 7:30 am to 4 pm.).

Students who chose this option will enroll in cohort 40

Advantages of the Full-time Program

  • Candidates are able to earn their preliminary special education specialist credential in one calendar year

  • 18 units sem. 1 (6 units-student teaching)

  • 18 units, sem. 2 (6 units-student teaching)

  • 1- 3 unit course in winter and 1 in summer

  • Full-time day students are given priority registration for classes

Evening Program

  • Designed for students who are teaching

  • Most evening classes are held from 4-6:45, some from 7-8:45 and some on Saturday

  • Students receive on-the-job site support from university supervisors for their student teaching requirements. Students who chose this option will enroll in cohort 30. This option also supports candidates who work as paraeducators.
