  2. The First world war Background • A war fought for honor and power between alliances • -June 28th 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assonated • -July 29th 1914 Serbia is attacked in retaliation starting the war • -August 4th 1914 Germany invades France through Belgium • -England joins the war

  3. Trench warfareAta stalemate

GallipoliApril 24th 1915 • -fought on the Turkish peninsula ally forces(England, France, Russia) seek to knock turkey a German ally out of the war and secure shipping lanes as well. • -with the western front at a deadlock it was also considered to launch and attack through the Balkan states which would require a beach head. • -the allies landing at Gallipoli was a complete failure and they were met by a dug in Turkish army in trench systems.

  5. Verdun • -Germany attacks the line of Verdun much to the French's surprise • -the Germans used their superior artillery to destroy the French trench system at Verdun cause havoc and confusion • Although little ground was gained or lost 300000 men died and 750000 were wounded.

  6. The battle of ypresjune 7th 1917 • This is the 3rd battle fought at Ypres, the first in 1914 and the second in 1915 • -In the morning the ally forces set off 19 giant mines that had been dug under the enemy lines after 18 months • -Combined with artillery the British disrupted German defense but to slow to capitalize the British lost their advantage.

  7. New strategies The storm trooper Tank • -armed with light machine guns flame throwers and automatic rifles quickly running into trench's covered by artillery. • The tank was first introduced in 1916 and was used to scare the enemy and provide support for the infantry

  8. New strategies Machine gun pillboxes Creeping barrage • Designed to house machine gun crews and give them greater cover from artillery barrages. • Complementing the preliminary barrage this bombardment slowly progressed forward and was coordinated along with infantry movements.
