  1. Where Does Life Come From? Chapter 1 – Section 3

  2. Key Vocabulary and Concepts

  3. Early Thoughts on Origin of Life • How did Life Start? • 17th Century Recipe for Life – • Take a Container - Place some dirty underwear and some wheat • Wait 21 days • You will create mice! • Spontaneous Generation – Living things came from non-living things • Scientific experiments would not support, but did initially disprove this!

  4. Louis Pasteur and Biogensis • Mid 1800’s - Scientific experiments finally disproved spontaneous generation (Louis Pasteur) • Theory of Biogenesis - Living things can only come from other living things Activity -

  5. Origins of Life • So if life can only come from life – How did life start? • Earth is hypothesized to be 4.6 billion years old. Some fossils are 3.5 billion years old (Possibly when life begins) • Oparin’s Hypothesis – (1924) – Alexander I Oparin suggested that early Earth atmosphere had no oxygen, but was made up of ammonia, hydrogen, methane, and water vapor • He hypothesized that these gases combined to form more complex compounds necessary for early life

  6. Oparin Hypothesis Supported • 1953 – Stanley Miler and Harold Urey set up an experiment to test Oparin’s hypothesis • Found that these gasses combined with water and electricity (lightning) can form simple amino acids. • This supports Oparin’s hypothesis but does not prove life began this way. • Research continues in this field.
