  1. The Living Abstract Personification

  2. Personification A technique wherein a writer gives human qualities to an inanimate objects animals or ideas. EX: The leaves danced in the breeze

  3. Abstract Nouns A noun that denotes an idea, emotion, feeling, quality or other intangible concept, as opposed to a concrete item, or a physical object. Most personal qualities are abstract nouns…

  4. Step One: Select a Personal Trait Complete the following… He/She is so ___________ ADJECTIVE

  5. Step 2: Turn the adjective into its noun form Creative = creativity

  6. Step 3: Who is it? If the trait you’ve chosen were a person, what would they look like? Creativity would be an eternal child with crazy ringlets and attire.

  7. Step 4: What they do… This is your opportunity to SHOW how a person like this behaves – Where do they go? What do they do? Do they do it well? *Think the most interesting man in the world commercials

  8. Example: Creativity Creativity wears a patchwork dress She sewed herself Out of favorite t-shirts From her childhood Without regard for color scheme, Or geometric unity. Her hair falls in suicidal curves About her face And down her back, Balking at gravity with each bounce. When she’s working, She twists her tendrils into a messy bun Held by precariously placed Colored pencils in case she needs them. She is young and full faced, But sometimes she dresses up Like an old woman With crepe paper wrinkles and a cane To see how age feels. She sleeps when she can, Which is nearly never, Yet her porcelain skin is never marred By dark circles. Day or night, there are never Bad dreams, only new adventures. Last year, she introduced Fear To Hope so he could sleep through the night In her embrace. She dances Without music Except the jangle of her belt, the bangles on her wrists And the clack of her heels on the pavement. She travels at the speed of thought On the whisper of the wind To meet Imagination For bubbling hot chocolate And rainbow marshmallows In the ear of a child dozing at nap time.

  9. Step 5: Turn it into a Poem • The piece should be a biography of the trait as a person • Write the poem in free verse form • Begin with imagery to establish their look before moving on to their actions • Include multiple types of figurative language
