  2. Higher Ed Environment • Information stored on large-scale enterprise servers. • Access increasingly mediated by middleware. • Desktop devices are not under central control. • Use of multiple devices from multiple locations is typical. • Extremely high turnover of user base. • Edges of the enterprise are fuzzy.

  3. Current Issues - Email • Poorly behaved clients. • IMAP used as if it's POP. • Checking all folders for new messages (Outlook Express). • Checking all folders for message count (OS X Mail app). • Not supporting server-side features such as search or sort. • Not supporting secure authentication mechanisms.

  4. Current Issues - Calendaring • No good implementation of interoperable protocols. • No good enterprise-wide scalable solutions. • Products which violate basic principles: • Forced integration of calendaring with email (Exchange).

  5. What Chandler Offers – Shorter Term • A collaborative design process between OSAF and higher ed institutions. • A chance to offer departments a better local solution for information management than Exchange. • An opportunity to advance the state of support for interoperable standards.

  6. What Chandler Offers – Longer Term • A new open source set of tools for managing personal information in the enterprise. • A chance to understand new ways of supporting fuzzy institutional borders. • A chance to explore the ways new P2P paradigms interact with our server-based environment. • A new working partnership between higher ed and open source developers.

  7. More Information • Chandler in Higher Education • Chandler Product Roadmap • Chandler Timeline
