  2. Research has shown that 50% of our new members drop out within the first three years. Fortunately, we know the main reasons why:

  3. Retention Challenges 1 - Lengthy/boring meetings (Club Dynamics) 2 - Club cliques and politics 3 - Lack of meaningful involvement 4 - Improper Induction of new member 5 - Selecting the New Member

  4. Meetings are a significant part of the Lions clubexperience and have a bigimpact on how the association is perceived by members. Meetings

  5. Meetings are also important to the efficientfunctioning of your Club. Holding effectivemeetings will help you accomplish two things:1) keep members interested2) keep your club running successfully Meetings

  6. Meetings • When developing an agenda - Keeping it Brief • Make sure meeting content is relevant for your audience. • Program Pointers • Recipients of Club Service • Include Local Community Leaders

  7. Meetings • Local Business People • Cultural Organizations • Club Partners • District Committee Chairmen

Meetings • Attitude is Infectious: • How you conduct you meetings will have a big effect on attendees. • Are you excited about being a Lion? • Conversely, if you are unduly uncomfortable or bored, your membership will be influenced by those negative feelings. • Check with your District Leadership Team.

  9. Club Dynamics Retention Challenge: Negative cliques and club politics can leave members feeling left out and resentful. It is one of the chief reasons members drop out of their clubs.

Club Dynamics • Attendance Cues – Paying careful attention to attendance trends can help uncover retention problems. • Kudos to Club Members – Give praise often to club members for a job well done, a good idea or an effort beyond the call of duty. • Retention is for All Members – While making sure new members feel welcomed, involved and comfortable, it is important to remember long-term members..

Club Dynamics • Scramble Seating Arrangements – Change seating arrangements at meetings. • Making New Members Feel Welcome: After the initial introductions, follow up with members to make them feel part of the club. • New Members Make Great Greeters – Have new members and their sponsors serve as greeters. • Make it Fun – Have some fun while encouraging members to mix with their fellow members.

  12. Involvement Retention Challenge Lack of meaningful involvement is one of the primary reasons members drop out of Lions clubs.

Involvement Observing your club closely: • Does your club involve new members in activities immediately? • Are “important” activities and responsibilities “reserved” for certain members? • Have club members held the same committee positions for a number of years • Do you encourage members to become involved in activities that interest them?

  14. Involvement • Do you know your members’ interests and skills? • Are club members excited and enthusiastic when performing their duties? • Do any of your members seem bored or restless? • Has attendance at your meetings dropped? • Has participation during your service activities dropped?

  15. Involvement Share Your Enthusiasm Attitude is infectious. How you feel about making positive changes to your club will affect how members respond. Be upbeat and enthusiastic -- your members will be motivated to support your efforts.

  16. Involvement Retention is a Team Activity Explain the importance of retention of club members to club officers and committee chairpersons. Make sure they understand they share the responsibility for involving members in all aspects of the club.

  17. Involvement Have an Informal Gathering – Invite new members to meet with club officers in a casual, non-club setting. Share Praise Freely – Important to all members, and especially new members, is positive reinforcement for a job done well.

  18. Working Together Retention Challenge Clubs that are unable to bridge differences and unite for a common goal will create dissatisfied members

  19. Working Together It is vital that your club members’ attitude toward the introduction of new members be positive. Do not let a fear of change jeopardize the potential of your club to reach more people in need.

  20. Working Together Women are an amazing resource for Lions clubs, and given that the association was one of the very first of the major service club organizations to accept women as members, we have the duty to support them in their efforts as Lions club members

  21. Working Together Set the Tone – Club leadership has an enormous impact on the atmosphere of the club. Making it clear that all members are to be accepted and respected as essential parts of the club, and setting a welcoming, tolerant atmosphere will go a long way in bridging potential gaps. Find Common Ground Set Common Goals

  22. Working Together Association Mission Statement: To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.

  23. Selecting New Member • Review: • Club’s Fund Raising Projects • Club’s Community Service Projects • Role of Club - District – Multiple District and Lions Club International • Potential Time and Annual Cost commitments

Selecting New Member • Determine if there are any conflicts with current members • Understand why this person wants to become a member • Review the Clubs meeting process/agenda • Get commitment from Club members • When this is done properly and the person wants to join • Retention will not be a problem…….

  25. RETENTION A Final Note… Retaining members is a critical, ongoing process. Each year, the dynamics of a club change. Sometimes these changes are subtle, with the effects not being easily recognizable. Work together with your members to plan and implement a successful retention campaign in your club!
