Session Introduction This session will share the process and outcomes of the inaugural academic library-sponsored research awards for student papers at Brookdale Community College and Monmouth University. We will discuss submission requirements, evaluation criteria, finding funding sources, promoting the awards, and student/faculty response.

  3. What are Student Research Awards? • Awards sponsored by academic libraries to reward students’ use of resources in completing research papers • Focus on research skills • Showcase on student scholarship

  4. Why Offer Student Research Awards? • Promote information literacy (IL) • Recognize student skill and creativity in research • Develop student’s thinking skills • Highlight library’s resources and collections • Collaborate with faculty • Excellent PR for library

Timeline 2007 April/May Invite selection panel members to participate April/May Draft application, eligibility and selection criteria Early September Selection panel meets to finalize documents, dates, etc. September – AprilPublicize the award! 2008 February Begin making arrangements for the reception April 18 Application deadline, 5:00 pm April 15 -18 Create reading packets for panel members April 18 - 25 Extend reception invitations to campus administrators* April 21 - 25 Selection Panel Reading Period April 28 Selection Panel Deliberations Meeting April 28 - May 1 Notify finalists by phone and email; notify all other applicants of status by letter April 28 – May 1 Finalize reception plans/details, including: award checks, plaque, certificates of participation, room set-up, catering May 7 Award Reception in Library, 4:30-6:00 pm Post-Reception Publicize outcomes; mail certificates to applicants who did not attend reception; start planning for next year!

  19. Eligibility • Currently enrolled as students • All levels and disciplines • Nomination from faculty • Projects must fulfill requirements for a course • Projects must contain an element of library research • Use of primary or secondary material to support thesis

  20. Applying • Requirements • Application coversheet and checklist • Nomination form from faculty • 100 word abstract/summary of the project • 500-750 word essay about the research process • Final version of the project; papers 8-20 pages • Bibliography of sources • Deadlines

  21. Selecting • Two librarians read and evaluated projects • Use of rubric to ‘score’ projects • Notified winners via email • Sent thank you emails to others

Evaluating • Make extensive, creative use of library services, resources, and collections in any format • Ability to select, evaluate, and synthesize library resources and to successfully use them • Show evidence of significant personal learning and development of research skills • Essay describing research techniques given most weight

  23. Winning • $250 check for each of two winners • Certificate given at Student Awards Reception • In commencement program • Library newsletter announcement of winners
