  2. Location Where are this region’s major cities, (top three by population) land forms and resources? 1. Phoenix, Arizona 2. El Paso, Texas 3. Albuquerque, New Mexico  Relative location to compass • The Southwest is south of the West and Midwest, and is west of the Southeast. Latitude and Longitude of largest city in region • 33° 26' 53" N / 112° 4' 23" W *What could be some of the reasons people chose to live in this region or large city? • People may want to live in the southwest because it is a good place for ranches.

Place Customs, religions, ethnic groups in region • Some of the ethnic groups are Ute, Navajo, Apache, Comanche, Paiute, Hopi, and the Anasazi. • One of the customs is Cinco de Myo. • Some of the religions are protestant denominations and tribal religions. Identify and locate- major resources, major landforms • Some of the major landforms are the Grand Canyon, and the Great Sand Dunes. • Some of the major resources are oil. Describe climate and weather patterns The weather in the Southwest is usually fairly warm and dry with occasional rain. *What effect does climate have on settlement patterns in the region? • In some places it is too rocky to build a home and some there is a desert and almost no water.

Human Environment Interaction How has climate affected the settlement of the region? • In some places it is too rocky to build a home and some there is a desert and almost no water. *How has pollution affected the lives of the people in the region? • The BP oil spill severely affected fishing.

  5. Movement Identify why people have chosen to live where they have in the region • Because the place where they live suites their needs. How are goods transported to, within and out of region (focus on transportation methods: rivers, highways, airports, railways) • Goods in this country are transported by plane, boat, car, truck, and train *What might happen if one or more of the major transportation routes within the region were interrupted? • If one or more transportation routes in this region were to be interrupted, then people would have a harder time receives and sending goods. It would take longer or might not even get to its destination.

  6. Regions List and describe major tourist attractions • Grand Canyon, The Alamo, and year-round golfing. Any OTHER unique characteristics in region? • There’s Monument Valley. *What economic impact does the region have on the U.S. economy? • The U.S. gets plenty of oil and fish from the Southwest
