  2. History • The Honor Society was founded in 1958 by members of the Section on Dental Hygiene Education of the American Dental Education Association

  3. Mission • The mission of Sigma Phi Alpha is to promote, recognize, and honor scholarship, leadership, and service among dental hygiene students and graduates of dental hygiene programs.

  4. Vision • It is the vision of Sigma Phi Alpha to enhance the dental hygiene profession's role and image in the delivery of quality healthcare to the public. 

  5. Purpose • The Honor Society encourages electees to contribute to the advancement of the dental hygiene profession.

  14. Hu-Friedy Scholarship • The Sigma Phi Alpha Hu-Friedy Component Chapter scholarship is sponsored by Hu-Friedy and is awarded at the Sigma Phi Alpha Annual Session each Spring. • The scholarship is a $ 500.00 award, to be used by the recipient chapter, for the purchase of Hu-Friedy hand held instruments, ultrasonic inserts, cassettes, and other associated products .

Undergraduate Student Scholarship • The Sigma Phi Alpha undergraduate scholarship is awarded to a candidate pursuing a certificate/associates or baccalaureate degree in an accredited dental hygiene school with an active chapter of the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society. • Applicant must demonstrate a dental hygiene grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale • The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) Institute for Oral Health is the administrator. • The amount of the award varies based on Sigma Phi Alpha funding each year. • Applications for the scholarships may be obtained from the ADHA by calling 1(800) 243-2342 or are found on-line at: http://www.adha.org/institute/index.htm

  16. Graduate Student Scholarship • The Sigma Phi Alpha graduate scholarship is awarded to an applicant pursuing a graduate degree in dental hygiene or a related field. • Applicants must include a statement of professional activities related to dental hygiene, and recipients will be encouraged to submit a manuscript to the ADHA for publication. • Applicant must demonstrate a dental hygiene grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.  • The amount of the award varies based on Sigma Phi Alpha funding each year. • Applications for the scholarships may be obtained from the ADHA by calling 1(800) 243-2342 or are found on-line at: http://www.adha.org/institute/index.htm

  17. Linda DeVore, RDH, MSEd Scholarship • The Sigma Phi Alpha Supreme Chapter offers the Linda DeVore Scholarship for a registered dental hygienist who is pursuing either an undergraduate or a graduate degree with the exclusive purpose of teaching and/or being an administrator in dental hygiene education. • The applicant should include a statement of professional growth and vision related to the future of dental hygiene education. • Applicants need to demonstrate a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.  • The amount of the award varies based on Sigma Phi Alpha funding each year. • Application of this scholarship must be made to the Supreme Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha in care of the current President.
