Natural Area • The Grand Canyon is to be considered a desert biome. • The climate of the Grand Canyon varies widely due to different elevations. • The South Rim has an elevation of 7,000 which means snow in the winter and cool nights, even in the summer. • The inner canyon has a river running through it, this area can reach 120° F

  3. Natural Area Cont. • The North Rim is 8,000 feet above sea level, and gets snow year round. • Weather in the spring and fall is very unpredictable. • The North Rim is closed in the winter.

  4. Wildlife • Since the Grand Canyon elevation varies so much there is a wide variety in wildlife. • There are many different kinds of birds, reptiles, and insects.

  6. Why should we preserve it? • The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, we should be doing everything possible to preserve this park. • There is not other place in the world like the Grand Canyon.

  7. Park Threats • Air pollution: • Air pollution is the main threat to the Grand Canyon. • Visitation: • In the 1900’s the park had a mere 49,000 visitors, but these days the park will host 4 million visitors annually.

  8. Conservation Efforts • The air pollution is one of the cleanest in the U.S. but still the haze that covers the Canyon is increasing rapidly from near by cities. • Progress was made when a signing between the Grand Canyon Trust and the owners of the Navajo Generating Station was settled, this reduced sulfur emissions by 90 percent.
