Leadership Pipeline Represents major mindset shifts in your leadership role Identifies the performance results and leadership competencies at each passage Defines the transition in the way leadership time is spent and the type of work valued May require letting go of what has made you successful in the past What is the Leadership Pipeline? Its a framework for understanding how a persons role changes as they progress in their careers. It starts with Personal Leadership. From there, you may be in a role where you Lead Others. This requires some shifts in the way you think about your leadership role. Youre now working with and through others, not as an individual contributor. You are held accountable for different results, that may require different skills and behaviors. Your time is spent differently, and things that made you successful in the past, may not be what makes you successful now. The Leadership Pipeline defines roles people play It IS NOT about TITLES. For example, there are Directors at the Personal Leadership passage, because they do not have direct reports. There are some Directors who lead others, and some who Lead Managers. It is all about the specific role you have, not about a title. Lets look more specifically at each passage in the Leadership Pipeline.What is the Leadership Pipeline? Its a framework for understanding how a persons role changes as they progress in their careers. It starts with Personal Leadership. From there, you may be in a role where you Lead Others. Emphasize the differences in how someone thinks, the type of results they get, how the planning and strategy horizon changes, etc. Map the group you are working with to the Pipeline: Ex: Paul is the CEO the only one at Leading the Enterprise. Marka Leads a Business Matt Salmonson Leads Multiple Functions: Planning, Distribution and Production. Peter Warner Leads a Function (Production) Directors in Production may Lead Managers, or Lead Others There may be Managers at the Leading Others or Personal Leadership passages Its pretty simple. If you dont have any direct reports, you are at Personal Leadership. If you do have direct reports, you are at Leading Others. If your direct reports have direct reports, you are at Leading Managers. When we look across Gap Inc., there are only about 200 people total at the Leading Functions passage or above. Most of us are at personal leadership, or leading others, with some at leading leaders.
