  1. Scientific Process How scientists investigate

  2. Problem/Question • Since this is a question it needs to end with a question mark. ?

  3. Research • Notes (from your teacher, books, internet) • Information from other sources: people, videos, podcasts,…..) • Doesn’t need to be written on your “Lab form”

  4. Hypothesis • Your educated guess which answers your question/problem. • Based on your research you just did. • Must be able to test it – through the next step. • Written as If…….then…….statement.

  5. Experiment • MaterialsIn a column list all the supplies needed. Only capitalize name brands. Only use numbers when identifying quantities. • ProceduresExact steps to use in order to perform the experiment (similar to a “How To” but you use numbers.) Number each complete sentence.

  6. Analyze Data • Observations from your senses and from measurements. • Put this information into a graph or table.

  7. Draw Conclusions • Does your evidence cause you to accept or reject your hypothesis? Be specific. • claim (a statement about a solution to the problem) • evidence (scientific data that supports the claim) • reasoning (justification that shows why the data counts as evidence to support the claim)

  8. Claim • A conclusion that answers the original question. • This should be a sentence.

  9. Evidence • From the chart or graph (usually numbers) • Make sure it supports your claim. • Make sure you have a lot of data in your evidence.

  10. Reasoning • It shows why the data counts as evidence. • This is always from scientific “Research”. • You should have enough reasoning to justify your evidence.

  11. Now you do one! • Study the problem and chart on the next page. • Write a conclusion in “Claim, Evidence, Reasoning” form.

  12. Are any of these liquids the same substance?

  13. Look at examples • Underline the claim – give it a score from the rubric • Circle the evidence – give it a score from the rubric • Put (parenthesis) around the reasoning – give it a score from the rubric

  14. NOW • Look at YOURS and revise it if necessary. • Have another student grade it using the rubric.
