  1. Rotor Screw (front side) & nut (backside) Spool Electronics Enclosure R.I.S.E: Renewable & Integrated Systems of Energy A technical model for the energy, water, sanitation and recycling needs for a sustainable community Students: Paola Davalos, Sergio Baltodano, Michael Enriquez, Natalia Duque, BabacarCisse Advising Professors: Andrés Tremante, BerrinTansel The Mechanical and Materials and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Departments at Florida International University Heating Element Shaft housing Cooling Fan Nozzle Hopper Double bucket Geared Motor Auger Bit Problem Statement Proposed Designs Prototyping and Testing There is a need for an interdisciplinary approach to assess technical solutions to some of mankind's most pressing issues: energy and water security, climate change, plastic waste reuse, and the development of a community focused expertise in sustainability. • Proposed designs will be optimized using SolidWorks and ANSYS simulation software • Mechanical properties of recycled polymers will be analyzed through laboratory tensile and thermal testing • Experimental data will be gathered from off-grid energy unit • Manual grinder shreds plastic waste • Temperature controller allows processing of multiple types of plastics • Rotating heating mechanism extrudes grinded plastic into filament for 3D printing. Motivation Objectives Explore new areas of research in sustainable development to address global issues from a multi-disciplinary and technical perspective • Water Security • Develop an innovative recycler to transform used plastics into 3D printing material • Extrude recycled filament at a rate of at least 4 ft/min • Assure material properties of recycled plastics are within the range of virgin thermoplastics. (HDPE) & (PET) • Design a low-head pico-hydro turbine using recycled material to generate at least 10 Watts • Sustainable Community • Renewable Energy • Sustainable Development • Pico-hydro water wheel is printed with recycled material • Energy from flowing water is converted to electricity through use of the water wheel and a generator • Economic Growth • Sustainable Agriculture • Sustainable Waste Processing Team Members Responsibilities Timeline Michael Enriquez Sergio Baltodano • Sergio Baltodano:Material testing, examination of energy storage options, and energy unit data acquisition • Michael Enriquez: Design of recycling unit and parts acquisition • BabacarCisse: Design and analysis of pico hydro turbine • Paola Davalos & Natalia Duque: Water and sanitation systems design and analysis • Team: Assembly of recycling unit, prototype testing, integration of components BabacarCisse Natalia Duque & Paola Davalos
