  2. Bell-Ringer Work • Bell-Ringer #5: August 21, 2013 • To the best of your ability, summarize what you have learned thus far from this Chapter. Be sure to incorporate the terms: LEGITIMACY, POWER, AUTHORITY, & POLITICS! You may use your notes • Have your Vocabulary ready when I walk around the room.

Civics Island Continued • The island you are trapped in is the LOUISIANA SWAMPLANDS; except in island form. • What you need to know: • Daytime temperate: 95-100 degrees; HUMID • Nighttime temperature: 65-75 degrees; HUMID • Significant chance of rain. • Animals you will want to avoid • Poisonous spiders, water moccasins, alligators, leeches

Wednesday Plan • 1- BIG PAPER: Draw your island; color your island. • 2- SMALL PAPER: List your accessories from your backpacks • 3- SMALL PAPER: Draw inventions based on island resources and accessories from backpack • 4- SMALL PAPER: List system of government and roles/responsibilities for group members!

  8. Bell-Ringer • 5-7 sentences • What is power? • Who are some people in your life that have power? • Why do they have this power?

  9. What does this mean? • Thomas Paine, • “Society in every state is a blessing, but Government even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. • Do you think government is a necessary evil? • What is meant by the term “necessary evil?”

  10. Question • Why do we have this image in our minds that government is such a bad thing? • Why is government bad? • Why is government good? • Movies? • Conspiracy theories? • Video games?

  11. Power • Power • The possibility of imposing one’s will upon the behavior of another person. • Who are some people that you think have power? • What gives them this power? • Power is only as effective as the legitimacy of the person possessing the power.

Power • Five Sources of Power • Formal Authority • Power comes from power’s holder’s position. • Principals have formal authority over their students. • Persuasion • Power comes from influencing others to believe what you believe. • Pastors easily persuade people. • Expertise • Power comes from the skills one possesses. • Doctors are experts in their fields. • Coercion • Power comes from the ability to punish/penalize • Who has the ability to punish in society? • Rewards • Power comes from giving something of value.

How does power even work? • People with power must have legitimacy!! • People with power have to have people in society that believe in what they’re doing! • Social contract theory really helps this! • What does the social contract theory state? • This is an unwritten contract between……. • Do we have a social contract?

  21. Why Have Government? • Keeping things in check. • Protection • Providing public goods. • Schools, roads, fire stations. • I personally love to go to Rocky Mountain National Park.

  22. What makes a public good…public? • More than one person can consume a public good without reducing the amount available. • Once a public good is available, it is available to all! Now that you know what a public good is, what do you think examples of private goods are?

  24. Answer • Public good can be consumed by anyone and everyone. • A public good NEVER runs out!

  25. How does government provide public goods? • Coercion • Remind me again what coercion is…. • How does this assist government in giving public goods to the public? • Revenue • TAXES, TAXES, TAXES!! • You may not deal with them yet, but you will!!!! THESE ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF GOVERNMENT!

  26. Bell Ringer #3 • Give me the two ways that government receives the money used for public goods? • What is meant by the term public goods? • What are (3) examples of public goods that you enjoy?

  27. What type of government is best for society? • Monarchy? • Rule by one individual. • Why would this be bad? • Democracy? • This is what the U.S. government philosophy is. • What is one way we show being a democracy? • Oligarchy? • Rule by a wealthy few. • Why would this be bad?

Nation-states • Nation: people share a common language, ethnic origin, & culture. • State: geographical area controlled by a set government. • 4 characteristics of nation-states: • Territorial integrity • Nation-state has territory w/ boundaries. • Population • People live in this boundaries. • Code of laws • U.S. Constitution • National sovereignty. • Independent & self-governing.

  30. How does anything ever get done? • Institutions establish rules to live by. • We automatically know who has authority. • We know how decisions get made. • We know how we can influence those decisions?

How to win in Politics? • 1) Horse Trading: Winning by Giving to Get • Think car salesmen. • What do car salesmen do? • Have any of you ever used this philosophy to get what you wanted? • 2) Walkout: Winning by Refusing to Play • This is where someone just leaves. • You always have the ability to leave a situation. • There may be consequences but you always have that ability. • Have any of you ever used this philosophy to get what you wanted?

How to win in politics? • 3) Power Struggle: Outsmart and out strengthen your opponent. • Timely battle between two or more enemies. • This is when you can outwit your opponent. • SNEAKY way to win in politics. • 4) Winning by wiping out the opposition • Just being bigger and badder than your opponent. • Duke playing Northern Colorado in basketball; • Duke is just the better team.

  33. How to win in politics? • Civil disobedience: goal in life is to end evil. • This is the group of people who don’t listen and force someone to believe in what they believe in. • Do exactly the opposite of what is asked. • Strategy is to publicly shame the opposition.
