  3. Historical point • 1838 - Licej was founded in Kragujevac - teaching of mathematics and physics. • 1841 - Licej moved to Belgrade • 1863 – Licej was transformed to Velika škola (the Great School) • 1884 - astronomy teaching introduced at the Great School (Milan Nedeljković – professor)

Milan Nedeljković(1857-1950) • 1887- the first director of the Astronomical and MeteorologicalObservatory of Belgrade (founder of AOB) Program of studies of MN: 1-2 year: Infinitesimal calculus; Mathematical Physics; Meteorologiy Geodesy; Astronomy 3rd year: Practical work on Paris observatory 4th year: The first semester in London, the rest, travelling and visiting of all important astronomical and meteorological institutions in Europe

Vojislav Misković (1892 – 1976) • Started his studies of Astronomy in Budapest and Göttingen • Sent by Serbian goverment in France to study Astronomy • 1919 Assistant on L'Observatoire de Marseille • 1922 Astronome in Nice • 1924 Doctorat ès Sciences in Montpellier • 1925 Aword of French Academy of Science

Present investigation • 8 projects financed by Serbian Ministry for education and science (7 AOB + 1 MF) • Investigation from atomic processes in stars to extragalactic astronomy • Astronomical observatory + Department of Astronomy, Faculty of Mathematics • Institute of Physics – Zemun; Faculty of Science Kragujevac (Nis), Department of Physics, Novi Sad • Participation in FP7 (VAMDAC, STARDUST, BELISSIMA, etc.), COST actions, wide international collaboration

Facilities and human resources • Astronomical Observatory Belgrade – staff 52 (40 astronomers) • Department of Astronomy MFUB – 17 (staff + PhD students) • Other institutions around 30-40, total around 100 researchers • A small developers cluster at AOB consists of 12 nodes each with 1xX5675@3.0 GHz with 24GB RAM, 2Tb disk, and 2xTesla/Fermi M2090 GPU and Infiniband interconnection between nodes

  10. Operated by the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade. The construction works started in 2005. Location: mountain Vidojevica mountain near the city of Prokuplje, 1155 metres above the sea level. The site has very low light pollution. Dome on the left (6m in diameter) has a rotating circular roof and it houses a telescope with a 60 cm primary mirror. University education in astronomy in Serbia • 128 years of Serbian university education in astronomy • Astronomy courses are taught at five state universities in Serbia - University of Belgrade (BS, MSc, PhD) - University of Novi Sad (BS) - University of Niš, - University of Kragujevac and - University of Priština inKosovskaMitrovica In 2005, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is introduced and within the past three years the studies have been accredited at all state universities in Serbia.

  14. 2-years Erasmus Mundus Masters Course (120 ECTS) in Astrophysics • 1st semester - students attend courses at the entrance university (University of Innsbruck) – focused on basic learning in Astronomy and Astrophysics • 2nd semester - spent at one of the 2 Italian partner (Padova and Rome) • 3rd semester - spent in one of the three partner institutions: Rome, Göttingen, or Belgrade depending on the astrophysical branches which students will select to specialize • 4th semester - Master’s thesis (30 ECTS) - can be accomplished in any of the partner institutions(possibility of joint supervision)

  15. Training at the Astronomical Station Vidojevica Since 2012 two summer practices have been organized, lasting 3-5 days with about 12 students each year (6 from Belgrad and 6 from Novi Sad). Since 2012 students are trained to use the reflector Astro Optik (D=60 cm) of the Astronomical Station at mountain Vidojevica (southern Serbia, h=1155m).

  21. SERBIAN EAAS BRANCH • 13 members of EAAS • M.S. Dimitrijevic and A. A. Mihailov in steering commitee of EAAS • We registred a society as a branch of EAAS • We would like to have better connection with EAAS members

Conclusions: • Problems connected with lack of financial sources (astronomy is expensive science) – e.g. participation in ESO and ESACollaboration. • Similar situation as e.g. in Bulgaria, very useful collaboration with astronomers from WB • To apply from some infrastructural projects in the frame H2020?
