  2. Monday • Opening – Please copy down the following quotation – • “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” • Nelson Mandela

  3. Article • Take out your article from Friday. • Write out a Works Cited entry for it. • (Author. “Title.” Title of Source. Date of publication. Web. Access Date. URL [short form]. • Write a 3-5 sentence summary of the article. • Skip a line. • Write a 3-5 sentence commentary on how useful, accurate, and/or interesting the article is or is not. • When finished, submit with your article • Learning Target: I can summarize information and evaluate the source and its content.

  4. Grammar • Check rest of lesson 1 • Lesson 2 – Punctuation – Commas • Learning Target: I can edit for comma use.

  5. Improving Writing • Improving sentences • Adding Variety • Learning Target: I can add detail and change sentence order around so to add variety in my writing.

  6. Tuesday Openings • Active and Passive Voice – • Active Voice occurs when the subject performs the action. In Passive Voice, the subject of the sentence is acted on by another agent. • Example • Passive: Snuffles was taken to the vet by my mom. • Active: My mom took Snuffles to the vet. • Rewrite in Active Voice • Chrissy’s dress for the dance was chosen by her mom.

Grammar • Correct Improving Sentences • Colons and Semi-colons • Semi-colon rules – these are rarely used ones. • Colons – a couple very common ones – the list, business letter, intro quotation. • Complete Lesson 2. • Learning Target: • I can edit for colons and semi-colons and commas. • I can combine sentences for variety and emphasis.

  8. Word Choice Journal 2 – Varying Vocabulary • Review Vocabulary list I am giving you. Write a paragraph about yourself, your activities, your skills using at least 6 of the words. Please underline or highlight within your writing. • I can use new or more mature vocabulary to explain myself.

Thesis • Thesis will be centered around a specific career, internship, apprenticeship, military program, or college goal. • Part of the thesis needs to identify why this is a viable option for you – • Why you think you would be good at this • What experiences you have had that make you settle on this particular choice.

Thesis • Not a thesis • Sam, Steve, and my mom. • Everything influenced my choice of career • I plan to go to college at MCC; then I will transfer to GVSU. • Will work as a thesis • My love of the outdoors and my family have influenced me to pursue a career as a conversation officer. • From my experiences in CTC and my family members who already work in construction, I have decided I want to study to be an engineer.

Compose your thesis • Once approved, begin outlining your body paragraphs. • What can you use as examples? • What story can you tell to illustrate this about you? • What specifics are in your background that you can talk about? • Learning Target: I can write a clear precise thesis that incorporates two key points.

  13. Wednesday • Correct Lesson 2 • Review Body paragraphs • Type up body paragraphs • Print off for work tomorrow. • Learning Targets • I can edit for errors in commas, semi-colons, and colons. • I can explain my career goal and support it with specific relevant details.

  14. Body Paragraphs • State with a statement of focus – • Develop • Tell stories • Explain past experience that is related • Use specific people, places, events. • Final Sentence • Tie back to thesis.

  15. Thursday • Opening – do Journal 3 – Word Choice • Review the Top Ten Word Choice Mistakes list. • Write a paragraph about a friend, a class, or your job. Use a word from each of the 1-10 word choice items. Please highlight each and put the number next to it corresponding to the list. • Learning Target: I can monitor my own correct use of word choice items.

  16. Agenda • Lesson 3 – ApostrophesMarks • Sentence Variety practice • Conclusions Learning Target: I can communicate my goals and plans in writing. I can edit and revise for proper use of quotation marks.

  17. Apostrophes – mean possession • Max’s car • The tourist’s wallet • The girls’ dressing room • The employees’ bonuses. • Add ‘s – car of Max • Add ‘s – wallet of the tourist • Add ‘ after the s – dressing room of the girls (dressing room of more than one girl) • Add ‘ after the s – bonuses are for all the employees.

  18. Conclusion • Bring reader/listener up to your present • What have you done in taking steps toward your career/college goal? • What do you have left to do? • These will typically be very short – 3-4 sentences. (the reverse of your intro) • Learning Target: I can wrap up my career narrative and keep it focused on the topic.

  19. Friday • Opening – Write the corrected version of the sentence below. • Its to bad when it’s the weekend and their are so many things I want to do and only 48 hours too do them, so my dog did not get its bath unless you count walking in the rain. • (This is all one sentence – but there are punctuation and word choice issues)

  20. Introductions • Reread introduction • Need to remove any duplication so it does not repeat the body paragraphs. • Need to add thesis • Transition to it. • Need to review my comments • Need to combine with your body and conclusion into one essay and submit to Turnitin.com

  21. Friday • Lesson 4 – Quotation Marks • Review Introduction – look at my comments • Discuss Googledrive comments • Revise your introduction and tie in thesis to it. • Make sure to not repeat things in body paragraphs. • Transition to thesis. • Look at other comments/suggestions and make improvements. • Assemble and submit essay to Turnitin.com • Peer Revision on Monday – if you are absent, know that you will need to do this on your own during the day on Monday.

  22. Preview of next week • Monday – Peer review • Tuesday – Review of feedback, Submission directions • Wednesday – Unit 1 Mastery Review – do and correct • Thursday – Revise, fill out submission sheet, and submit final draft of essay • Friday – Unit 1 Test Note: • If you will be leaving early from vacation, you must still submit your essay on time to Turnitin.com • Also, I strongly advise you to take your Unit 1 Test prior to leaving as you will not be as well prepared the day we return from class.
