  2. Date Time 1) Draw a clock, include only the numbers: 12, 3, 6 and 9. 2- A different person signs their name next to those numbers. 3- Sign your name on your 4 dates sheets next to the same number they signed on your sheet. 4- You should end up with 4 dates

  3. Health Concerns in the United States On your paper: • Make a list of the many health issues facing Americans today. Then: • Discuss with your 12 o’clock date On your paper: 2. State how these issues could affect you. Then: • Discuss with your 3 o’clock date

  4. Myths and Misconceptions If you are physically fit, you are perfectly healthy. Some people are physically fit but are not socially, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually healthy. Heart disease and cancer just run in some families; there’s nothing that can prevent it. While the risks of developing some types of cancer are highly influenced by genetic makeup, there are also lifestyle risk factors that influence them. Because of advances in medicine, today’s teens are much healthier than teens were in the early 20th century. In some respects this is true. However, teens today face different health problems, and some new ones are life threatening.

Over the past 20 years Overall fitness of young people has declined, today’s teenagers have more body fat than those of 20 years ago Most teenagers have poor eating habits, and eat foods that are high in fat and salt Blood pressure is higher on average. Greater risk for heart disease Much higher percentage of body fat

Additional Facts Only about 1/2 of young people ages 12 – 21 regularly participate in vigorous physical activity ¼ of young people report no vigorous physical activity Many people who do start to exercise give up within six months Males are more likely than females to have a heart attack Both genders risk increase with age.

  9. Describing Health Health is a state of well-being that comes from a good balance of the five aspects of health. • The 5 Aspects of Health are… • 1. Physical Health/Fitness • 2. Social Health/Fitness • 3. Spiritual Health/Fitness • 4. Mental/Intellectual Health/Fitness • 5. Emotional Health/Fitness • Wellness: • Optimal health in each of the five aspects of health. • Quality of your life

Physical Health/Fitness • Assuming personal responsibility for your health by exercising, eating healthy foods, observing measures to avoid illness and injury. • Health related physical fitness • attributes that contribute to disease prevention and health promotion • Skill related physical fitness • attributes that contribute to the ability to participate successfully in physical activities such as a variety of sports

  12. What determines your level of fitness? • Heredity • Sets some limits on our potential • Environment • Set limits on the opportunities which may be available • Behavior • Most responsible for determining your total fitness • You are in control

Controllable risk factors • What is a Risk factor ? • An attribute used to determine how likely you are to develop a disease or health problem • Sedentary (non-active lifestyle) • Cigarette smoking • *1/3 of all cancer and majority of lung cancers due directly to smoking • *1/3 of all heart attacks are due to smoking • *Increases risk of heart disease • Obesity • *Excess body fat • *Increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory disorders, certain types of cancer • High blood pressure (hypertension) • High cholesterol levels • *Buildup or blockage on inner walls of arteries • High stress lifestyle

  14. Uncontrollable risk factors • Heredity/Family history • Age • Gender

Social Health/Fitness • Interactions with people to build satisfying relationships with family, friends, co-workers and other in community. • Development started when you were born. • Influenced by your social networks and the support that you get from the people that you care about and love. • Being considerate of others, sharing your true feelings, serving your community, and asking for help when you need it are all parts of social health.

Spiritual Health/Fitness • Finding meaning and purpose in life whether through religion, meditation or other methods. • This means different things to different people. • *For some, it is defined by a religion. • *For others, it involves understanding your individual purpose in life. • Being spiritually healthy means you are working to achieve your spiritual potential and to find harmony in life. You are peace with yourself and those around you.

Mental or Intellectual Health/Fitness • The ability to think critically about issues; having an active, curious mind • Being mentally healthy means… • *You can accept new ideas. • *You recognize the reality of a situation. • *You have a sense of self worth. • *You are tolerant of different things. • *You can cope with stress because you know that stress is a part of life that you can handle.

  18. Emotional Health/Fitness • Ability to deal with stress, to maintain a positive self-concept and to adapt to changes in life • Expressing feelings in an appropriate way. • Being emotionally healthy means… • *You can overcome difficult times. • *You enjoy life. • *You see hardships as a challenge. • *You can express anger without violence, sadness, or without serious depression.

  19. Final Date! On your paper: • With your 9 o’clock date- Make a list of ways you can take responsibility for your own level of wellness. Refer to the components of wellness: • Intellectual • Physical • Emotional • Spiritual • Social

Teen Health Issues • In the early 1900’s, the biggest health issue facing teens was early death due to communicable diseases. • Communicable diseases-a disease that is passed from person to person by an organism. • Today, 1 in 5 teens in the United States have at least 1 serious health issue.
