  3. American Military Mobilization • The American army was very small • Passed the Selective Service Act • The Draft • Ages 18-45 • Women were excluded • Chosen by lottery

  4. Training Soldiers • Trained for 9 months before battle • Did not have enough weapons for every soldier so they trained with rocks and sticks

  5. Women in the Army • Expected to stay & take care of home • Only allowed to be nurses and non-combatants • Had military rank but not given equal pay

  6. Building a Strong Navy • War Industries Board • Coordinated Purchase of War Supplies • Tanks, ships, rations, etc. • Shipyard workers were exempt from the Draft • Government aided the families of shipyard workers • Fabrication • Building individual parts and shipping to one location for construction

  9. Fighting in Europe • General John J. Pershing – leader of American forces • Did not want other leaders to be able to give American soldiers orders • Red Baron • Shot down 61 pilots before he was shot down by stray artillery fire. • Video

  10. Alvin York • Tried to dodge the draft by claiming to be a conscientious objector • American WWI Hero • In one battle he killed 25 Germans and captured 132 prisoners

  11. Collapse of Germany • 1918 Austria – Hungry had surrendered • German soldiers were starting to refuse to fight • Signed a cease-fire – Armistice Signed

  12. The Casualties • 26 Million people died • About ½ were not soldiers
