  19. If we have been taught to mentally see an abstract replica of reality, we understand the meaning behind the word. However, if we cannot see mental image, we react to the sensory reality that we do understand. Verbal/Abstract vs. Nonverbal/Sensory a lack of abstract = a lack of resolution

  20. How to Convey Reality • Don’t contact parents when you are emotional yourself. (Take time to prepare yourself for the conversation.) • Do frame the situation objectively. (Tell what happened before, what happened during, what happened after, sharing just the facts, not your commentary.) • Don’t set up a sensory overload (Keep it to one issue or incident per contact.) • Do give parents a chance to process. (Don’t expect an answer or reaction immediately, but do ask for follow-up with you if necessary.)

  21. T I P S for Parent Communication Think How and where might be most effective for communication? What do you expect the parent to do? Inform What other information do you have that the parent needs? What questions might the parent ask? Prepare How much time do you have/need? Where is the best place to place to hold the conversation? Stay Objective Have you made some presuppositions that might not hold true? Do you need to have a third party present or continue later?
