Experimenting with Open Access and Institutional Repositories • OUP is keen to experiment with any business model which may help it achieve its mission more effectively than existing models. • Our experiments are designed to discover whether new business models can achieve wider, more cost-effective dissemination than existing models • But in order to be successful any new business model will also need to be financially viable

  3. Case Studies • ModelCase Study • Partial OA Journal of Experimental Botany • Full OA Nucleic Acids Research • Institutional Repositories SHERPA/Oxford University • Subject Repositories PubMed Central

  4. Case Study: Nucleic Acids Research Total HighWire PubMed Central Source: HighWire/PubMed Central

  5. Experimenting with Open Access Publishing • Next steps: additional research • Further usage analysis (November 2005 and May 2006) • Citations/impact factor analysis (May 2006) • Partners • LISU • ISI

  6. Institutional and Subject Repositories • Self archiving of preprints and postprints • May confuse readers about which version of an article is the authoritative version • May increase total publication costs • May threaten financial viability of journals • Needs careful experimentation to test potential benefits
