  1. SPP Fields meetingSearch Coil MagnetometerInstrument design and status December 2nd 2012

  2. Instrument Overview • Measurement of alternative magnetic field • 3 components in the 1Hz to 20kHz frequency range • 1 component in the 10kHz to 1MHz frequency range • Accommodation on the mag boom in the shadow of the spacecraft • Strong heritage from Solar Orbiter Search Coil (RPW-SCM) and TARANIS

  3. Mechanical design • SCM mechanical assembly • Orthogonal assembly of the 3 antennas (±0.1°) • Insulated mechanical interface with the boom with the bedplate • Total mass with MLI 680g

  4. Thermal design • Passive thermal design (used on Solar Orbiter) • Insulation from the boom interface with the bedplate (30% of thermal loss) Screws in titanium / Contact surface reduction • Decrease of the thermal link through the harness (65% of thermal loss) • Active thermal design • Heaters located inside the foot near the preamp. • Temperature probes (thermistors) • Concept to be agreed for SP+ • Heater lines and temperature probes redundancies • Thermal analysis must be done with SP+ conditions to determine the required heating power

  5. Harness accommodation • 2 pigtails for the harness output: length out of MLI 10cm • Sensor harness : • 4 measurement signals • Power supply • Calibration signal • Thermal control system • Thermistors • Heaters • Both pigtails can merge into a single connector

  6. Progress status • Structural and Thermal Model manufactured for a thermal balance test within the framework of TARANIS mission • Definition of all the assembly procedures and required tools • Antennas gluing and alignment • Antennas potting under vacuum with STYCAST resin • Internal cabling inside the foot Antennas ↔ preamp ↔ harness • Internal potting inside the foot with STYCAST resin TARANIS search coil STM

  7. Progress status • Assembly of the EM search coil on TARANIS has started cabled antenna Mechanical elements Antennas slices (PEEK) Closing plate (PEEK) 3 antennas Tantalum shield Centering ring foot (PEEK) Anti-rotation pin (titanium) Preamplifier Carbon fiber tube

  8. Progress status • Thermal design : thermal analysis shall be run with SP+ mission temperature conditions • Because of the harness influence on the thermal interface, heating concept need to be agreed first • Open point 1 : heating concept and redundancies • Preamplifier design is ready, evolution possible : • Gain adaptation to the measurement dynamic range (R or C values) • Open point 2 : dynamic range is 140dB (L2 specifications), 160dB between SCM noise floor and maximum expected B fields (SDB values 02/2012) • what is the maximum field intensity to be measured by SCM ? • Saturation allowed on some spikes ?
