  2. The PLAU Context • IRWID Recommendation to Create PLAU • Establishing PLAU included in NAP as MWCA agenda • Bilateral Agreement between Canada and Bangladesh to establish PLAU

  3. Rationale of PLAU • Assist the Ministry in its lead agency role for mainstreaming gender equality • Facilitate and support the other GOB agencies’ initiatives to respond to the priorities and needs of women

  4. Mandate of PLAU • Support to NCWD • Follow up to the PFA and the National Action Plan • Support to WID Focal Points • Implementation of Institutional Review of Women in Development (IR-WID) recommendations

  5. Mandate of PLAU (Continued) • Support to MWCA units in strengthening their policy leadership and advocacy capacity • Links with women’s organization • Assessment of information and research sources and needs

  6. PLAU Composition • 3 GOB positions: Joint Chief, Deputy Chief and Senior Assistant Chief • 4 local experts on contract as donor counterparts to provide technical support to the PLAU-GOB staff • Expatriate experts from Canada to facilitate activities of the PLAU

  7. PLAU Status • The Unit now functioning as a separate unit of the MWCA since January 2002 and has already been notified under PLAGE • The Unit has got the endorsement from the Ministry of Establishment and is awaiting approval of the Ministry of Finance

  8. Documentation and Resource Centre (DRC) A Resource Centre on Gender and Development

  9. Objectives of DRC • Support PLAU to carryout policy advocacy and research activities • Enhance flow of information within and outside PLAU • Provide services to facilitate application of gender mainstreaming concepts, methodologies, tools and institutional pracites

  10. Objectives of DRC (Continued) • Establish communication and learning networks among stakeholders • Facilitate the process of accessibility to information among selected civil society groups

  11. Components of DRC • Documentation with Audio-Visual Reference Services • Project briefing • Paper clipping • Information on grassroots org. • Gender disaggregated database

  12. Resources Available in DRC • Women specific issues: violence, health, employment, empowerment, development, human rights etc. • Research documents on gender & dev. • Periodicals on gender issues • Newspaper clippings-21 key heads • Resources/pubs. of PLAGE & MWCA • Documentaries on gender related issues
