  4. Introduction to Rickard • Rickard sales R6 million per month. • Rickard sales of VAV diffuser about 3000/month • Rickard VAV diffusion equipment are available with old reliable pneumatic controlled systems and modern electronic control supplied with proportional electric heaters. BMS compatible controls are also available. • Rickard also offer a range of heating/cooling thermally powered diffusers.

  21. Background • New 'green' rating system to launchThe Green Building Council of SA is about to launch its new Green Star rating tool:The world is currently facing a climate catastrophe due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases. Global warming, rising temperatures and sea levels, severe climate events, and the extinction of various species all threaten the planet. Experts believe we have ten years in which to dramatically reduce gas emissions or face the worst. "The building industry seems to have been largely overlooked by the Kyoto protocol," says Bruce Kerswill, chairman of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). "However, 40% of the world's energy is consumed by buildings, either through direct consumption or through the use of products which consume energy to produce and transport. The implementation of 'green' buildings can effectively reduce consumption by 30 – 70%. This is particularly important in SA, where the bulk of electricity comes from coal and is therefore 'dirty' energy."The Green Building Council of SA has been formed to address these issues directly. An independent, non-profit organization launched in 2007, the council aims to promote and facilitate green building practices through market based solutions. The Council is also an 'emerging member' of the World Green Building Council's international network and focuses currently on commercial buildings, with a broad membership base of property owners and developers, architects, engineers, product suppliers and governmental institutes. So what's a green building? • "A green building is one which is energy and resource efficient and environmentally responsible in terms of design, materials and practices," says Nicola Douglas, GBCSA's CEO. "At this point in time the construction of a green building does cost slightly more, but we expect costs to reduce in line with normal building costs as legislation is brought about and the concept kicks in."And kick in it will, believes Douglas. "Case studies in other countries have shown that by and large tenants prefer green buildings, which generally have more natural light, more fresh air, and less 'sick building' syndrome," she says. "This helps firms increase staff productivity by up to 15% thanks to fewer sick days, and for this reason tenants are prepared to pay premium rentals for a green building."Rating system 'the first step' • The GBCSA initially identified that a system for rating buildings was the first step in encouraging this form of building."After carefully looking at various systems including the US and UK systems, the Australian Green Star rating system struck us as the best system for SA," says Kerswill. • "It's a second generation system that combines the best of the other systems, and we found it a very clear, easy to use system."The system uses various rating levels over nine different categories to assess a building, which may then be rated from one to six stars in terms of compliance. Points are awarded for architectural design that makes the most of natural light and air ventilation, to the use of grey and black water where possible, and materials such as recycled timber. Good management of the systems and ongoing environmental and waste management also provide additional points. Energy is the largest category and counts for 25% of the rating. Points are measured in terms of gas emissions. The Green Star system has been customized for South Africa's environment and the pilot rating tool will be released in July 2008. Two months will be allowed for testing and public comment."This is a very exciting time for us," says Kerswill. "Companies are already applying to be rated and we are looking forward to the day when developers will get preference for energy efficient designs." - By Tracey SandilandsThe GBCSA will be presenting the Green Building Council of SA Convention and Exhibition in November 2008 at the Cape Town Convention Centre.

  22. Indoor Environmental Quality Credits: Individual Comfort Control Thermal Comfort Air Change Effectiveness

  23. Indoor Environmental Quality Credit:Individual Comfort Control

  24. Indoor Environmental Quality Credit:Thermal Comfort • Compliance with Ashrae 55-1992 • Diffuser only HVAC product that directly effects comfort. • Temperature and velocity requirements based on activity and clothing levels.

  25. Why Personal Comfort? • Thermal comfort often cited as the number one complaint in buildings today. • Studies have confirmed that lack of individual temperature control is a big issue for building owners. • Studies have linked improved comfort to reduced absenteeism and therefore improved productivity. • Labor costs are typically ten times higher that cost of property, so improved comfort control is rewarded with large returns in productivity.

  26. Employee productivity gains

  27. Indoor Environmental Quality Credit:AirChangeEffectiveness

  28. Conclusion(Air Change Effectiveness) • A Variable Geometry, Variable Volume Air Terminal can safely be turned down to 33% of its design capacity. • For safety, Minimum air quantity should not be less than 2.5 l/s per m² • When heater capacity is limited to 10°C temp differential, the supply air temp will never be higher than a safe 35°C

  29. Building Management Credits Building Tuning Commissioning Information Management

  30. Management Credit:Building Tuning • Diffusers are self balancing and fine-tunes air delivery to the precise needs of the office. CONTROL DISC SUPPLY AIR SUPPLY AIR ROOM AIR INDUCTION

  31. Management Credit:Building Tuning • Diffusers supplied with neck heaters to only supply heat where it is needed as a last resort. No excess heating. No over cooling.

  33. Management Credit:Information Management • BMS compatible controller • Information collected per diffuser: • Room Temperature • Supply temperature • Flow rate per diffuser • Night Setback Facility • Control disc position

  34. Energy Efficiency Credits Energy Improvement Electrical Sub-metering Tenancy Sub-metering Peak Energy Demand Reduction

  35. Energy Credit:Energy Improvement • Design building to comply with ASHRAE/IESAN Standard 90.1-1999 or the local energy code, whichever is more stringent. • Optimize energy performance.

  36. Energy Credit

  37. Energy Credit:Electrical Sub-meteringTenancy Sub-metering • Controls and Neck Heaters can be powered via separate circuits. • This enables Sub-metering • Sub-metering also possible via BMS system. • This enables Sub-metering right down to individual offices and individual diffusers. • Heating cost on individual diffusers or group of diffusers can be measured.

  38. Energy Credit:Peak Energy Demand Reduction • Heating on different diffusers can be staggered to reduce total building peak demand. • Heater output can be limited per zone or per diffuser to reduce power requirements during peak demand periods.

  39. Management Credit: (Maintenance) • Diffusers need minimal if any Maintenance.

  40. Summary • Individual Temperature Control with Low Pressure VAV improves Indoor Environmental Quality • Low Pressure VAV supports MANAGEMENT of building HVAC energy needs. • Low Pressure VAV Reduce HVAC ENERGY requirements.
