Arms Race • September 2, 1949 • USSR Tested their first nuclear weapon • October 1949 • China fell to the communists • January 1950 • Truman ordered Atomic Energy Commission to build the H Bomb (1,000 X more powerful than A bomb) • Perpetual arms race began • Airplanes, submarines, missiles built to destroy the world • Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) • Each country used its weapons as a shield hoping the threat of destruction would prevent the use of it.

Foreign Policy Truman Eisenhower Felt that Communism was the greatest threat to American way of life Opposed conventional forces Ordered stockpiling of weapons for nuclear war Defense Dept budget $35.8 billion Brinkmanship introduced • Believed in containing communism • Entered foreign conflicts started by the USSR draining resources • Defense Dept budget $50.5 billion

  4. Radiation and Fall out • Alaskan lichens affected by radiation • Atmosphere contained radiation • Nevada desert residents suffer from long term health problems

Poland & Hungary • 1956 Poland • Polish workers rioted and won power in the government • Poland stayed with the Warsaw Pact, so the USSR allowed the resistance • 1956 Hungary • Hungarian students rioted against USSR control • Soviet soldiers marched on Hungary, executing hundreds and restored more harsh soviet control

Suez Crisis • Egypt’s President Nassar • Wanted to construct a dam on the Nile River • USA & Great Britain initially offered to fund the project • Egypt recognized communist China as a country and opened negotiations with USSR for trade forcing USA and Great Britain to back out of the project • Nassar responded by nationalizing the Suez Canal • Britain & France joined with Israel to retake the canal • Created tensions between USA & the other nations

Eisenhower Doctrine • January 1957 Eisenhower addressed the Soviet influence in the Middle East • US would use force to help any Middle Eastern nation resist communist threat • Used this as a precedent to send troops to Lebanon in 1958 • CIA assigned to protect American Interests in the Cold War • 1953 installed Pro-American leader in Iran • 1954 installed Pro-American leader in Guatemala

  8. Space Race • October 1957 • Soviets Launched Sputnik 1 • Following the success of Sputnik they launched a larger satellite with a dog Laika • National Defense Education Budget passed • $1 billion targeted to educate scientists • NASA created to counteract USSR advancements
