  1. Introduction Our research project was founded on the belief that current freshmen summer orientation does not contribute to the University’s effort to become carbon neutral by 2015. The goal of our research project, Keeping Freshman Orientation Fresh, is to discover whether or not moving orientation to the week prior to fall quarter compliments the Climate Neutrality Action Plan crafted by Santa Clara University in 2010. Research Question Would moving Freshman Orientation from the middle of summer to the week before fall quarter be more congruent with Santa Clara University’s sustainability goals while still providing a useful orientation experience? • Methods • Visited official websites of Universities • Searched University’s archives • Met with RLC Faculty Directors • Contacted SCU Admissions Office • Surveyed student body • Calculated carbon emissions • Presented research to Undergraduate Studies Council • Results • Summer Orientation has not decreased summer melt • SCU not consistent with other Jesuit Universities • 63% undergrads prefer orientation week before Fall Quarter • For out-of-state students, revised orientation would eliminate at least 193 tons of carbon dioxide • this calculation does not include carbon emitted from parents or siblings who travel along. *Fellow Jesuit schools in the West Coast Conference • Conclusions • Reducing carbon would aid in achieving Climate Neutrality by 2015. • Majority of students surveyed prefer orientation at the beginning of fall term. • Fall Orientation would allow faculty more time for research in the summer. • Reduce carbon affiliated with the University. • Fall Orientation would allow academic advisors to form relationship with freshmen sooner. • Save money by reducing the number of trips to SCU. • Demonstrate to incoming students SCU’s commitment to sustainability and social justice.
