1. Cabaret Science: All about Sound Sol M. Gruner, Cornell University, DMR 0936384 Broader Impacts: The CLASSE Education and Outreach staff Lora Hine and Erik Herman brought a collection of interactive, hands-on science demonstrations and exhibits to Delilah’s Lounge (Ithaca, NY) Friday night, March 18th, to teach the public all about the science of sound. Lora and Erik developed a series of visual demonstrations to illustrate how sound travels in air, strings and tubes. Guests learned about the vibration of air molecules to generate sounds, and how a receiver sensitive to that frequency will hear it. Audience members got involved and set the tone for a fun-filled evening of science concepts introduced using Slinkys, springs, strobe-lights and strings to help model sound waves. Folks got a kick out of operating the gummy-bear torsional wave rope, making tunes with their teeth, fiddling with tuning forks and listening to talky-tapes. Enthusiastic lounge patrons use a rope laced with sticks and gummy-bear candy to model the transmission and reflections of waves, and standing wave behavior. CHESS DMR-0936384 2011_1
