  1. School Accreditation Program Program Overview

  2. In September BMHS began a five year accreditation program that has been developed by the Nova Scotia Department of Education. • This program is mandatory for all schools in Nova Scotia.

  3. The school accreditation program needs ALL members of the school community to be involved and offer input including staff, students and parents.

  4. School accreditation is about increasing student success through school improvement.

  5. School improvement has the goal of creating the right kind of environment for students to learn and achieve.

  6. During the process of developing a school improvement plan: • Schools conduct internal reviews • Identify strengths and areas for improvement • Prioritize and set goals • Take appropriate and specific actions to achieve those goals

  7. Year 1 – begin cycle: Internal review (September to December 2008) School improvement plan (January to March 2009) External review (April or May 2009) Years 2 - 4 – Implementation: Action plans Ongoing data collection Measure growth Annual report Year 5: Accreditation visit Prepare for a new cycle School Accreditation Cycle

  8. School Accreditation Is: • Built on a self assessment process that includes all staff, students and parents • Providing public accountability • Validating the school’s improvement plan • Strengthening school-community relations • An impetus for change

  9. School Accreditation Is NOT: • To assess individual staff performance • To compare schools • About facilities or playgrounds • A one-time event or process • A school “inspection”

  10. In short Accreditation is… “Telling Our School’s Story” • Who Are We? • How Are We Doing? • What Needs to Change? • Where Do We Want to Be? • How Are We Going to Get There?

  11. Internal Review Team • Most of the first year work of the Accreditation process is done by the INTERNAL REVIEW TEAM who organize all of the information given to them by the staff, students and parents. • BMHS Internal Review Team: Cammy d’Eon, Leah Saulnier-Muise, Sarah Acker, and Terri Spinney
