  3. Special programmes Cooperation – Collaborative research Ideas – Frontier Research People – Human Potential Capacities – Research Capacity + JRC (non-nuclear) JRC (nuclear) Euratom

  4. 10 themes • Health • Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology • Information and Communication Technologies • Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies • Energy • Environment (including Climate Change) • Transport (including Aeronautics) (€ 4,18 billion) • Socio-Economic Sciences and the Humanities • Security • Space

  5. Transport Theme • Develop “safer”, “greener” and “smarter” transport systems for: • respecting environment and natural resources • the benefit of citizens and society • Secure and develop the competitiveness of European industry in the global market

  6. Activities Defined, notably, on the basis of Strategic Research Agendas (SRAs) developed by Technology Platforms • ERRAC for rail Transport (since 2001) • ERTRAC for Road Transport (since 2002) • WATERBORNE for Waterborne Transport (since 2005) and • The FP7 Transport Advisory Committee • The Transport Programme Committee of MS

  7. The greening of surface transport • Encouraging modal shift and decongesting transport corridors • Ensuring sustainable urban transport • Improving safety and security • Strengthening competitiveness • Cross-cutting activities(not a bullet point of the SP)

  8. ERRAC was set up in 2001 with the ambitious goal of creating a single European body with both the competence and capability to help revitalise the European rail sector and make it more competitive, by fostering increased innovation and guiding research efforts at European level. ERRAC is comprised of 45 representatives from each of the major European rail research stakeholders: manufacturers, operators, infrastructure managers, the European Commission, EU Member States, academics and users’ groups. ERRAC covers all forms of rail transport: from conventional, high speed and freight applications to urban and regional services. ERRAC advises the European Commission on rail research priorities to be included in the EC’s annual FP Transport theme Work Programs and the Call for Proposals for EU funded research projects.

  9. ERRAC is focusing on: • Defining, and implementing steps to achieve, a joint European rail research strategy for the next 20 years through: The Strategic Rail Research Agenda 2020 (SRRA). • Sustained, high-level commitment from all stakeholders • Developing an efficient, competitive and sustainable European railway system • Agreement on common positions and recommendations for various rail research issues.

  10. ERRAC is focusing also on:Enhancing collaborative European rail research by:  * Building consensus among stakeholders  * Improving synergies between EU, national and private rail research  * Strengthening and re-organizing research and development efforts  * Facilitating effective pooling of human and material resources  * Launching ambitious co-operative research schemes

  11. ERRAC – European Rail Research Advisory Councilconsists of:* Plenary Meeting(all members)* Support GroupERRAC is chaired by Mr. Andrew Mc Naughton (NetworkRail). The Vice-Chairmen are Mr. Dan Otteborn (Bombardier) and Mr. Manuel Pereira (IST Lisbon). Dan Otterborn leads the Extended Support Group (Steering Committee) of the ERRAC ROADMAP Project = Support Group + WP (co-)leaders

  12. The ERRAC ROADMAP project

  13. ERRAC Core Business • ‘Rail 21 Brochure’, presented to the Commissioner for Research, Janez Potocnik at UNIFE Annual Reception in Brussels on the 8th of March 2006 ERRAC Core Business Vision Vision 2020 • Original ERRAC Strategic Rail Research Agenda (SRRA 2020), published in 2002 Strategy SRRA • ‘SRRA 2020’ update, presented the 27th of June 2007 to the Director for Transport at DG Research, Andras Siegler Implementation Roadmaps

  14. Implementation: the ROADMAPS 2020 timeline today Continous tracking of where we are – take into account also what have been previously done 1st phase 2nd phase • Developping knowledge for future steps • Open points for future steps • Develop project that are concrete, measurable, implementable x phase • Links between different steps • EC Framework Program inline with the timeline of the different steps • Understand the phenomena, understand solution and modeling, pre-production testing and demonstrators, implementation • Policy recommendations for investment needs and EU legislations in business reality • The impact of such roadmaps could not be linear in time • The roadmaps have to be made taking into account barriers (economical and legal – TSIs, etc.)

  15. ERRAC Future activities: new Work Packages • Energy and Environment • Personal Security • Test, Homologation and Safety • Competitiveness and enabling technologies • Strategy and Economics • Infrastructure Main priorities in the updated SRRA: To better respond to the FP 7 Work Programs, it was thought best to “translate” these 6 priorities into the EC priorities for Transport Research (Cross reference/Matrix) + adding an Evaluation and Rail research Database and a Management WP. Plenary NTPs ERA Support group and Management (WP) ETPs Other bodies WP The greening of surface transport WP Ensuring sustainable urban transport WP Evaluation and rail research data base WP Improving safety and security WP Encouraging modal shift and decongesting transport corridors WP Strengthening competitiveness

  16. ERRAC Future activities: new Work Packages Work Packages characteristics: • The main deliverable of each WP shall be a detailed “roadmap” for each area. • Each WP need to reflect the target of the ERRAC SRRA 2020. • The WP’s will be lead and “manned” by actors from the sector (rail associations or other representative associations, representatives from industry, railway undertakings, infrastructure managers, academics etc). • Each of the WP’s will organise annual seminars to discuss the roadmap with relevant rail stakeholders, customers, users, politicians etc. in order to fine-tune the roadmap. • Each WP has a leader and co-leader, representing RU’s, IM’s and industry. • Part of the work of the WP Leaders is to involve the right people in the WP and whenever opportune invite to join and/or actively participate to the work external specialists.

  17. ERRAC Future activities: new Work Packages WP 00. Support and management group: • Supervising and coordinating the work of the different WPs • Maintaining relationship with all other Platforms, Bodies, Institutions • Preparing the Plenary • Organising the thematic conferences from an administrative and dissemination/communication point of view • Basic administration • Advisory and influential role to the European Institutions • Support to the Plenary Chairman

  18. ERRAC Future activities: new Work Packages WP 01. The greening of surface transport: • Energy and Climate change • Noise • Environmental friendly design and production • Land use • End life strategies • monitor of ongoing projects • responsible for the content of the thematic conferences

  19. ERRAC Future activities: new Work Packages WP 02. Encouraging modal shift (long distance) and decongesting transport corridors: • Directly linked to the understanding of what make railway transport attractive for the end user (include quality of services and interfaces between transport modes) • Capacity optimisation • Reducing the cost of building new lines • monitor of ongoing projects • responsible for the content of the thematic conferences

  20. ERRAC Future activities: new Work Packages WP 03.
