  1. Lake Travis Levels at Volente Beach Elizabeth Reining Fall Term Project GISWR 2002

  2. Objective Realize loss of property at different lake levels over the past six months with taken GPS measurements.

  3. Government Takings Cases • LCRA controls land under surface of Lake Travis • Several court cases against government intrusion • Nolan • Dollan • Lucas

  4. Volente Beach

  5. Why Volente • Highland Lakes Marina • Sandy beach • Low incline • No cliffs • Easy access

  6. Data Collection Used a GPS unit to measure the historic and current lake line for the past six months.

  7. Problems • Weather: several weekends in a row, heavy cloud cover

  8. Problems • Magellen 310 only reads to the second

  9. Solution • Used Leica GS50 • Tracks to the centimeter • Gives accuracy of measurement • Measure length and area

  10. Leica GS 50 • Only available for two weekends • Went to historical data of flood of July, 2002 • Used photographs taken at the time of the flood • Marked the points on site • Took measurements from the markers

  11. Lab • Put the location data into dbf format to view in ArcGIS

  12. Lab • There formed polygons into a new shapefile

  13. Lab • Figured area of each polygon with XTools • Compared derived area from area given by Leica GS50 • Multiplied area by tax rate for square foot from information from Travis County Appraisal District

  14. Future • Next would like to find real estate value of the property because at times private property owners get value as determined by the market and not the tax appraisal district.

  15. Acknowledgments • Thanks to Matthew Horstman for his photographs and help with data collection • Thanks to Dr. Maidment for his help when my original idea would not work.
