Net Ionic Equations Ionic compounds dissociate or separate into ions when they are in solution A net ionic equation can be written to show dissolved ionic compounds as dissociated free ions AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq)→ AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq) Ag+(aq) + NO3-(aq)+ Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)→ AgCl(s) + Na+(aq) + NO3-(aq)

  3. Net Ionic Equations - continued Cancel out those ions that appear on both sides of the equation Ag+(aq) + NO3-(aq)+ Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq)→ AgCl(s) + Na+(aq) + NO3-(aq) What remains is the net ionic equation Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq)→ AgCl(s)
