  2. Speed • Speed is the ratio of the distance an object moves to the amount of time an object moves. • The SI unit of speed is meters/second (m/s). • Average speed is calculated for the entire duration of a trip. • Instantaneous speed is measured at a particular instant in time.

  3. Average Speed • Average speed is the total distance traveled divided by the total time it takes to travel that distance. • Formula: Average speed = total distance OR v = d/t total time

  4. Example Problem • When traveling on vacation, you measure the times and distances traveled. You travel 35 kilometers in 0.3 hour, followed by 53 kilometers in 0.8 hour. What is your average speed? • 35 + 53 = 88 total distance • .3 + .8 = 1.1 total time • 88/1.1=80 km/hr average speed

  5. Graphing Motion • A distance-time graph is a helpful way to show motion. • The slope of a line on a distance-time graph is speed.

  6. Velocity • The speed and direction in which an object is moving are called an object’s velocity. • Velocity is a description of both speed and direction of motion. • What could cause a change in velocity? • speed and velocity clip

  7. Velocity • Velocity is a vector. • Vector: a quantity that has magnitude (size, length, or amount) and direction • Vector addition

  8. Combining Velocities • The motion of an object can involve more than one velocity. • If so, combining these velocities is using vector addition.
