  1. Space Exploration: The Moon 1 Focus: The student can identify the Moon’s surface features and the moon phases.

  2. The natural satellite of the Earth. The Moon Prior Knowledge

  3. Revolves around the Earth. The Moon • Is covered with light and dark areas. The darker areas called “maria”, the Latin word for seas. • Is covered with numerous craters. These craters were caused by the impact of meteorites.

  4. The Moon Moon Earth

  5. The appearance of the moon as affected by the movement of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Moon Phases Prior Knowledge

  6. The moon reflects sunlight which allows us to see the lighted part. Moon Phases • Half the Moon is always lit by the Sun, however you can’t always see the lighted half. • What we do see are the different portions of the lighted part (Moon Phases).

  7. 3 Moon Phases 4 2 1 5 Sun Earth 6 8 7

  8. The first phase in the Lunar Cycle. New Moon Prior Knowledge

  9. Cannot be seen at night, because the lighted side of the Moon is facing the Sun. New Moon

  10. New Moon

  11. The second phase in the Lunar Cycle. Waxing Crescent Prior Knowledge

  12. Waxing Crescent 1. The sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half. 2. The term “waxing” means growing larger in size.

  13. Waxing Crescent

  14. The third phase in the Lunar Cycle. First Quarter Prior Knowledge

  15. First Quarter • happens when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. So we are seeing exactly half of the moon illuminated and half in shadow.

  16. First Quarter

  17. The fourth phase in the Lunar Cycle. Waxing Gibbous Prior Knowledge

  18. Waxing Gibbous • the sunlit portion is still increasing, but now it is more than half.

  19. Waxing Gibbous

  20. The fifth phase in the Lunar Cycle. Full Moon Prior Knowledge

  21. Full Moon • The moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, so the entire sunlit part of the Moon is facing us. The shadowed portion is entirely hidden from view.

  22. Full Moon

  23. The sixth phase in the Lunar Cycle. Waning Gibbous Prior Knowledge

  24. Waning Gibbous • the sunlit portion is decreasing, but it is still more than half. 1. The term “waning” means it appears to get smaller in size.

  25. Waning Gibbous

  26. The seventh phase in the Lunar Cycle. Third Quarter Prior Knowledge

  27. Third Quarter • happens when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. So we are seeing exactly half of the moon illuminated and half in shadow.

  28. Third Quarter

  29. The eighth phase in the Lunar Cycle. Waning Crescent Prior Knowledge

  30. Waning Crescent • The sunlit portion is still decreasing, but it is less than half.

  31. Waning Crescent

  32. Moon Phases Illustration • Draw the Moon Phases • Must include the Sun, Earth and the 8 Phases of the Moon. • The Phases must be drawn correctly and labeled with the name of the Moon Phase.
