  2. Gold Found • James Marshall: first person to find gold in California • Marshall is the first forty-niner or person who traveled to California to find gold. • California Gold Rush ensued and became one of the greatest migrations ever in America

  3. Gold Seekers • Thousands of people migrated to California for gold • Most were Americans but many came from other countries to get rich off gold • Chinese immigrants were active in the gold rush and created a lot of resentment from white Americans

  4. Positive Impacts of Gold Rush • California is able to become a US State in 1850 • Free State • San Francisco becomes major trade, industrial and banking center • Many 49ers are able to become rich from finding gold

  5. Negative Impacts of Gold Rush • Mass Migration hurt Californios(Spanish native to California) that were already there • Lose their land to Americans • Immigrants coming to find gold treated awful • Foreign Miners Tax (only on foreigners mining gold) • Turmoil in US over California becoming state • Threw off balance again between Southern slave states and Northern free states
