  1. Prepare to Hear the Word Acts 2:1- 13 The Coming of the Holy Spirit

  2. Where do we find this passage in the Bible? • We find the story of the Coming of the Holy Spirit (sometimes called Pentecost) in the Christian Scriptures (New Testament) in the book called Acts of the Apostles. • The book was given that title because it contains the ‘actions’ or ‘acts’ of the early Christian community.

  3. Where do we find this passage in the Bible? • ‘Acts’ is filled with stories about the Holy Spirit. • The story we call the Coming of the Holy Spirit is the first story to describe how the Spirit came to the community after the ascension of Jesus.

  4. Who wrote this passage? Want proof? Read the first verses of each book! • The Acts of the Apostles was written by the same author that wrote The Gospel of Luke.

  5. Who wrote this passage? • We don’t know much about ‘Luke’, but because he wrote two fairly long books, we think he was well educated! • Luke was the only Gospel writer to write a book about what happened to the community after the ascension of Jesus.

  6. What is the genre of this passage? • The Acts of the Apostles is a Historical Narrative. • A Historical Narrative is a narrative which is set in a real period in history. Historical Narratives tell stories about historical figures and what they did and said.

  7. What is the genre of this passage? • We must remember though that historical narratives are not written to record history the way that history books do. Instead they tell stories about people, places and events as they are remembered by a community. What other narratives do you know? Can you think of any historical narratives? Some historical narratives are made into movies…can you remember one about a famous ‘unsinkable’ boat that sank!

  8. What is the genre of this passage? • The story of the Coming of the Holy Spirit is a recount. It has a clear beginning, middle and end, but there is no problem or conflict, typical of narratives. So, now, have a read! Can you find the passage in Acts. Chapter 2, Verses 1-13. See if you can find the beginning, middle and end of the story!
